Arrakis - Sietch Tabr - Wednesday Morning & Afternoon

It was around dawn when the scent of food began wafting up from the kitchens. Fresh baked bread, coffee, and the lilting tones of Fremen chattering in a mixture of Galach and Chakobsa as they went about their lives.

If they were a bit more outgoing and less-wary of the visitors than they had been the day before, well, going out into the desert to meet with Shai-Hulud had shown a certain daring and respect, and those were two traits that the Fremen held very dear.

The portal would arrive to pick them all up around three, but until then, the visitors from Fandom had the run of Tabr.

Although it still didn't make you safe from the Aunties.

Claire stretched out in her bed and sat up, looking to see if any of her roomies were awake. Yesterday had been amazing and she was glad they had time to do more before heading back to Fandom, even if it did mean she'd be a little late for work.

Room 2

Yesterday had been . . . interesting, to say the least, and tiring, but Tahiri hadn't been able to sleep at all.

Sometime about three standard hours before dawn, she'd finally given up on trying and gone into a healing trance instead -- hey, she needed practice at that anyway -- sitting cross-legged on her bed. Which was how anyone waking up in the room would find her.

Harper was still feeling rather buzzed from riding a worm a worm yesterday.

More importantly, she managed to find a hat for Leda (http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/thing?id=230312) on her shopping trip.

The Kitchens

You thought that the Aunties would treat you with more respect now that you've ridden a worm? Cute.

You, and you. There's bread that needs baking, and they want coffee, and you can get started on cutting up fruit to make jam. There's also soup to start, vegetables to prepare, and someone needs to turn the meat.

If you wait along long enough and smile in all the right spots, they might start in on stories about Ghanima's exploits when she was little.

Minsc had just wanted something to eat! That's all. He thought he could be stealthy about it, too, but there was a reason he was a ranger and not a thief. Spotted easily and remembered well for his size and ability with a kitchen tool (tool, Minsc, not weapon), he was very quickly harried into more kitchen work.

Curses! Boo didn't seem to mind, though. He was much stealthier than the human.

Helen was up very early and was happy to help out in the kitchens. She worked cheerfully, smiling shyly at the Aunties.

Dinah wandered in early, bleary and hungover from the night's dreams, and while the aunties clucked at her bloodshot eyes, they insisted she sit down, have some water, and cut up this fruit.

Okay. She could do that.

"I can help!" said Harper, volunteering to chop vegetables.

If the Aunties were smart, they'd find something else for her to do after Harper sub-standard chopping job results in odd-size vegetable chunks and a lots of cuts on Harper's fingers.

After admiring the ovens and appreciating the scent of what was baking in them, a conversation that transcended the small amount of shared language, Francine settled at a table. She was happy to chop fruit in exchange for some of the jam that would eventually be made from it, and a chunk of home-baked bread. Someone's home, even if it wasn't hers.

Firekeeper's first impulse had been to help in the reservoir gardens, much as she'd done with Holly Gardener back in Eagle's Nest castle. However, that impulse had been shot down rather quickly as those working there realized while she had enthusiasm, she really wasn't very good at it. Instead, they'd told her that if she really wanted to help, perhaps the kitchens would be a better place.

When they arrived, Blind Seer rather quickly took up a position near the roasting meat, while Firekeeper was relegated to chopping fruit. She frowned a little when told using her Fang would not be acceptable, but took a kitchen knife as instructed. Humans had strange rules about food everywhere, it seemed.

Leda had lived in a communal apartment building when she was a street Elf. Helping out with the food was no big deal.

At some point during all the food prep, Ghanima tried darting through the kitchens in an attempt to snatch one of the hot buns out off the table.

She got her ponytail yanked, a chorus of yelling, and a spoon chucked at her head for her efforts, even as she wove her way through the tables and other workers with her illicit prize in-hand.

Not very princess-like, to be sure, but Ghani never needed to worry about that sort of thing when she was at Tabr.

Underground Reservoir

Down in the underground basin people work around the clock monitoring the water and working on the terraform project. You can wander the vegetable gardens or the fruit trees, carefully tended along the shores. There's people gardening if you want to chip in and help out, they won't mind.

Shopping!

There's a small bazaar in a large cavern, with baked goods, pottery, textiles, and other handcrafts. There are no crysknives for sale, but there are a few melee-weapons of off-world design.

Exploring!

Find all the nooks and crannies that you missed yesterday! Try to steal a kiss from a Fremen girl!

(Hint: You'll get laughed at and she'll run off.)

Rock Climbing

While scaling the front of Tabr is bad form, there's plenty of mountain surrounding it. Have fun.

Sandtrout

Out in the sandy courtyard and surrounding area, Fremen children are trying to play the glove game, coaxing sandtrout with drops of water, then smoothing them into "living gloves" before they drop off and burrow away. Try to participate, or just watch this strange game.

Thoppter Tour

Last chance to see Dune from above! There are pilots willing to fly groups of two or three out over the city, and circle out into the desert.

If you've passed Master Skywalker's flight class, the pilot will even let you drive, but he'll stay onboard to make sure you don't get lost or stray into Arakeen airspace.

The Portal Back

It's time to go, and the portal is flickering on the same ledge where we arrived. Chat with your friends, go running for the safety of Fandom, or take a last look around.

Irulan took a long look at Arrakis, her home. It was in her blood now, under her skin. If someone would have told her in her earlier years here that she'd come to love it she would probably laughed herself into an early grave.

Now she knew, understood. She turned around and left.
