It was around dawn when the scent of food began wafting up from the kitchens. Fresh baked bread, coffee, and the lilting tones of Fremen chattering in a mixture of Galach and Chakobsa as they went about their lives.

If they were a bit more outgoing and less-wary of the visitors than they had been the day before, well, going out into the desert to meet with Shai-Hulud had shown a certain daring and respect, and those were two traits that the Fremen held very dear.

The portal would arrive to pick them all up around three, but until then, the visitors from Fandom had the run of Tabr.

Although it still didn't make you safe from the Aunties.

"I wasn't worried about odd, I was worried you'd fall off it and it would eat you," Francine said, popping the other half of the fruit into her mouth, which did so much for the jam-canning project.

"Oh." Merlin put an arm around her waist. "I'm able to protect myself, you know."

"I know. But if you turned it into a giant mouse it could still eat you, you know." Which was Francine for I know, but I worry anyway.

"Has it been fun aside from the giant worms?"

Francine nodded. "I love the kitchen." She waved a hand at the collection of busy but not unfriendly people moving in and out. "Even if I can't understand half of what they're saying, it feels like..." She paused. "Well, not my home. But a home. Like they're all family."

Francine had to stop and think about that, taken a bit aback by the question. "I--maybe. Maybe, yeah. Food's a somewhat issue-ridden, fucked-up way of showing somebody you care."

"It's family," Merlin prompted. "You'll have to teach me to make these sorts of things for you then."

With all the insanity that went along with that word, Francine was still quietly touched at the implication. "Okay." She grinned. "We can start with something easy like chocolate chip cookies." The kind that came in a tube. So, you know. Very easy, except for the part about getting any of it onto the cookie sheet before you ate it all.

"I think we will have to work on it more than once if that happens."

Why yes, that was him trying for more than one date.

"Well, of course. You have to practice," she said very seriously. "...You also have to buy two tubes of cookie dough. Just in case gremlins steal the first one." Gremlins. Yes.

Merlin still gave her a look but went to rest his chin on her shoulder. "I'll take your word on it."
