Arrakis - Sietch Tabr - Wednesday Morning & Afternoon

It was around dawn when the scent of food began wafting up from the kitchens. Fresh baked bread, coffee, and the lilting tones of Fremen chattering in a mixture of Galach and Chakobsa as they went about their lives.

If they were a bit more outgoing and less-wary of the visitors than they had been the day before, well, going out into the desert to meet with Shai-Hulud had shown a certain daring and respect, and those were two traits that the Fremen held very dear.

The portal would arrive to pick them all up around three, but until then, the visitors from Fandom had the run of Tabr.

Although it still didn't make you safe from the Aunties.

"We're in the same room," she explained. "She was pretty upset when she woke up." Well, Francine hadn't seen that, but close enough. "Other people had nightmares. There was some stuff that scared her."

"So I've heard."

He wasn't about to go sharing someone else's secrets, mind.

His eyes were drawn back to the bread. "Well, so much for nightmares, I suppose." It would've been easier to mock it if he hadn't seen Dinah earlier.

Nor was Francine going to go into detail about the little she'd heard, but she nodded. Then snorted a little as she went back to slicing up something that had about the same consistency as an apple. "I'm surprised none of them were about giant worms. I mean. GIANT. WORMS."

"It's Leto's planet," Arthur said, dryly, even if the previous subject still had him all together too thoughtful. It was also as close to an insult he was going to give the man in relative public like this. "Although they weren't as bad to ride."

After you got over the mind-numbing fear and concern, yes.

Francine looked up at him incredulously. "GIANT. WORMS."

"Yes, Francine," he said, with a roll of his eyes, "I noticed."

Just, you know, wasn't going to admit to the scared part.

She shrugged, acknowledging that she was, you know. A girl. "You and Dinah riding them didn't surprise me all that much." Which didn't mean she was watching any less for them from her picnic blanket above the sand plain. "But Merlin and Morgana?"

"Merlin's an idiot," Arthur said, like that explained everything, "And Morgana has trouble understanding her boundaries." Or what was safe and what wasn't.

Honestly, the only reason he'd gone with them at all was partly that he wasn't going to let them go alone, and partly that he wasn't going to be called a coward.

"Merlin's not an idiot," she said automatically. Then, since the subject was, you know, his own safety, she amended. "...Sometimes Merlin's an idiot. If you tell him I said that, I'll..." Dammit. She had absolutely nothing she could threaten him with, and had sincere doubts the badgerface would have any effect. "Be really sad."

"Don't worry," he said, dryly, "I'll just redouble my efforts to make sure he realises it."

That got Francine to give him a look that almost managed dry, herself. "I think he's pretty aware that you think he is."

"And unlike him, I'm a keen observer of human nature," he said, matter-of-factly, "So he'd best 'get with it'."

Francine stared at him for a moment, then burst into giggles. "I'm sorry, did you just say 'get with it' ?"

Oh, for the love of--

"Yes," Arthur said, tilting his head up aristocratically, "I did. Your point?"

That really didn't help with the giggles, but eventually she swallowed them. "It's just kind of like hearing --" Ohhh, man, she should not have reached for a comparision, because it was a zombie one that came floating up at her. "--Captain Algren singing Thriller. Wow, do I wish I didn't remember that."

"Captain Algren is a honorable man," Arthur said, fixing her with a look. "If he's gone and done something ridiculous..." Like with the gremlin bite and the crocodiles, "You may owe him some mercy."

Especially since she wasn't 'one of the guys', so to speak.

Francine waved a hand. Thankfully the fruit-holding one. "This was during the --" Eww. "--zombie thing. I just wish I didn't remember it because I kind of wish I didn't remember any of that."

"You recuperated well," Arthur offered her, graciously. Yes, more longing glances towards the bread.

Francine's trademark obliviousness did not extend to food; she cut off another slice and passed it - and the dish of jam - his way. "Nothing's falling off anymore, if that's what you mean." She laughed. "Anyway it's just weird to hear you use modern slang; I guess it means the culture shock class was a good idea, though."

"I can say what I want," Arthur retorted, idly, snagging the bread and dunking it in a rather egregious amount of jam.

God help them all if he ever caught on to modern insults beyond what Katchoo spouted on the radio.

"Have you seen Merlin at all?"

"Tall skinny guy, big ears, adorable smile, kind of pale?" Apparently something about Arthur brought out the five year old in her at times. Imagine that. "Not this morning."

"If you see him before I do, tell him to see me," Arthur said, waving the hand that wasn't busy stuffing his face at her.

"Okay," Francine agreed, resisting - very, very hard - the urge to wipe jam from his nose. He'd figure it out.

Technically speaking, Arthur had servants for that kind of thing.

Having finished off the bread, he nodded. "Good."

...He'd figure it out eventually. Right?
