Kohala Coast, Hawaii | Evening | Sunday | February 20

As the sun gave way to the moon, the lights around the Big Island started coming on, brightening up the dark sky. Night falling just meant several new ways for the guests to enjoy themselves! A slight wind ruffled the palm trees but the temperature remained warm, making it comfortable enough to take long walks on the beach or just enjoy gazing up at the clear night sky.

There was still plenty to do, though! Nighttime activities were starting to swing into motion, music was wafting along the breeze, drawing people towards it's rhythmic sounds, and the smells of Hawaiian dishes were prevalent.

It was nighttime in Hawaii and the vacation had just begun!

"Maybe I need alcohol," Ben decided. "That is very weird. Rinoa isn't going to get that big, right?"

"You can have some of mine!" Karla volunteered, pushing her glasses over his way. "Try the purple one first--it makes the green one taste like candy."

Karla had spent several hours sampling the offerings at the bar. In the name of science, of course.

"But I don't think so? I think Adel got that size because of all the evil. Or something. I don't really know how it all works."

How to tactfully bring that up to Rinoa?

"I can't believe I'm drinking something this color on purpose," said the boy raised by a man raised on blue milk.

"I thought, you know, adding shoe lifts made you evil, not the actual evil," he added, taking a sip.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Karla informed him, already planning on ordering him the same bright pink drink she'd coerced Ender into drinking earlier. "What's a shoe lift and why are they evil?"

"They make you taller," Ben said, "and apparently evil people don't like being short? I guess? Jacen's posture certainly improved after he became a Sith."

This was before much alcohol. Fear the downward trend of this conversation.

"Now try the green one," Karla demanded. He needed to taste the candy! "Maybe it's because being good means you're always weighed down by thoughts and concerns and regrets and stuff. Going evil, though? You stop worrying about all of that and just...stand tall?"

That didn't explain Hobart, though, who always was a kind of twitchy, ferrety little man.

"And being short makes it impossible to loom effectively, I'm sure."

Ben tried it and shuddered. "That is a lot of sugar," he complained.

"But if you're short and old, you can smack people with a stick," he offered. "Master Yoda did that."

There was just no hope for Ben, clearly. He was so getting that pink drink from earlier.

"You don't have to be short to hit people with sticks," Karla argued. "Just old. Lady Wikus used to do that. She'd carry an ebony walking stick--that she didn't even need!--and use it to hit people who annoyed her."

Karla had been torn between hating the old woman and wanting to be just like her when she grew up.

"I think I got cut off my a very aggressive mother using her stroller like a ram," Ben mused, going back to the first drink. "Maybe I just need an accessory."

"I love you to death, Ben, but I'm not going to let you wear me as a necklace," Karla decided. "I have too much to do this week, like drink the memory of seven children away and try to gain all that weigh back."

Ben burst out laughing. "Seven? No wonder Jaenelle was so grumbly."

"Seven," Karla groaned, finishing off the remains of her other drink. "One with Raven, one with Bobby, one with Sookie and Emma, one who was an adopted war-orphan, and then two with Warren. And your daughter Valentine would not assist me in my dire hunt for a bottle of tequila. I blame you, Ben. You."

"Ender's the milk-drinker!" he protested. "That was probably his influence."

"Oh? And how much alcohol is there in your drink?" Karla asked, giving his glass a pointed look.

His real glass, not the one he'd practically stolen from her.

"Well, none," Ben admitted, "but I didn't want any right now!"

Except what was in the glass he'd totally stolen from her.

"Yeah, I can see that," Karla said, switching her pointed glare to her drink currently residing in front of him. She glanced around until she caught the eyes of another waiter and held up two fingers. "You owe me a platter of appetizers, darn it."

Her green drink didn't taste anywhere near as good without the purple.

"I'm not sure I can order something called pupu with a straight face," he admitted. "Think I can just point?"

"Way to be, like, nine years old," Karla teased, cheerfully ignoring the fact that she hadn't ordered anything for that exact same reason. "As a future diplomat of an entire galaxy, shouldn't you be used to this kind of thing?"

And don't think you were off the hook re: Dink Meeker, Ben. Karla was just waiting to catch you with your guard down.

"Oh, I'm used to it in my galaxy," he said airily. "Just not here."

He ordered "the platter thing" to an eyeroll from the waiter.

"Because it's so much more embarrassing here, where nobody knows you," Karla said, nodding. And stealing the cherry off of the drink the other waiter had just set down in front of Ben.

Enjoy your pink drink, boyo.

"Though there's no way to say it without sounding dumb. I practiced."

"That's why I didn't--hey that was mine!" Ben protested, swiping her drinking umbrella in retaliation.

There. That'll show her.

"And that was my drink!" Karla declared, tossing the cherry back with a smug grin. "Funny how 'try this' became 'finish it off, please.' Harrumph."

Karla had been so upset over that. You could tell from all the hard work she'd put into trying to get it back.

But that was fine. She had other methods of retaliation anyway.

"So, did you get lei'd today?" she asked casually.

Ben turned a lovely shade of scarlet. "Um."

Karla was going to a special Hell. A special, special Hell and she was going to cackle the entire way down.

"Oh, don't be all self-conscious about it!" she exclaimed. "I'm pretty sure most of the school did. Ender did, in fact. I deflowered him myself."

Okay, Ender had actually refused the lei, but she wasn't going to let something like 'the truth' get in the way of teasing.

Special, special Hell.

Do you know what hurts, Karla? Shooting pineapple juice out your nose.

"You what?"
