As the sun gave way to the moon, the lights around the Big Island started coming on, brightening up the dark sky. Night falling just meant several new ways for the guests to enjoy themselves! A slight wind ruffled the palm trees but the temperature remained warm, making it comfortable enough to take long walks on the beach or just enjoy gazing up at the clear night sky.

There was still plenty to do, though! Nighttime activities were starting to swing into motion, music was wafting along the breeze, drawing people towards it's rhythmic sounds, and the smells of Hawaiian dishes were prevalent.

It was nighttime in Hawaii and the vacation had just begun!

Don't laugh, Karla. You'll give it all away!

"Mine!" Karla took a sip from her second glass, hoping to choke down the giggles. "Yours is fine. What's a few extra cherries and...things?"

"It makes it almost impossible to get a drink without getting hit in the face with an umbrella or a plastic monkey," Ben complained.

"Better than the clingy little monkeys from a few weeks ago," Karla said serenely, drinking from her remarkably ungarnished drink. "If you lose an eye to a little plastic sword, I am going to laugh at you."

"Stupid monkeys," Ben bitched, making a face and removing most of the garnishes from his drink and placing them neatly on a cocktail napkin. "They were in the way."

"They enhance the drink!"

When used in moderation and not as an elaborate prank. But details.

"Or did you mean the live ones. In the way of what, perhaps?" she asked, grinning.

"Do you know how hard it is to kiss someone when there is a monkey sitting on your head?" Ben demanded, finishing off his drink.

"No, I can honestly say I don't," Karla said, signaling to the waiter that Ben needed another. He saw who she meant and winked. "I wasn't kissing anyone that day. But you should tell me all about it."

"Well, it pretty much killed all chance of anything interesting happening," Ben muttered. "We had two little monkeys just staring at us."

The waiter brought over another heavily-festooned drink just in time to hear that. Karla looked up and him and said, without batting an eye, "Euphemisms." He just set the drink down and headed back for the bar.

"Does this mean I should rethink my birthday gift then?" Karla asked. "I thought you'd like a pet."

"You'd be wrong," Ben said, beginning the long precess of fishing things from his drink.

"Your mouth says no, but your eyes say, 'Karla, all I ever really wanted was a love-monkey,'" Karla informed him, eyes dancing at all the stuff that was in Ben's glass. She was going to have to add more money to the generous tip she'd already given the bartender. He was inspired.

"I think you've lost your touch reading my eyes," Ben declared. "It's probably because of all the time you've wasted on poetry."

"Unlettered barbarian," Karla snorted. "Keep fishing from your drink and let the intellectual elite decide what good poetry is."

Ben snorted. "You've had too many fizzy things if you think that was good poetry."

"That was astral poetry," Karla declared with a toss of her hair. "It even had astral in the text. Or should I recite it again to jog your memory."

...Assuming she could remember it all again.

"Oh, I remember," Ben said. "It will forever live in my brain and I'm not sure I should thank you for that."

"It's hardly my fault you have perfect recall," Karla said, leaving off 'whinebox' by will alone. "And just think, you can recite it at parties and things whenever you need to. You're welcome."

"And every time I write Dink," Ben added, chuckling and trying to swap drinks with Karla.

"Hey!" Karla said, swatting at his hand. "What's wrong with your drink!"

Besides being half-empty before he took a sip.

"Monkeys were swimming in it," Ben told her.

The rum was starting to take effect. "Yours doesn't look like coolant, either."

"Because it's not," Karla informed him. "It's a pina colada. Or a rum punch. Or a melonball. I forget. But it's mine and you can't have it. Enjoy your monkey cooler or whatever."

And, because it was a brilliant idea, Karla decided to keep her drink safe by drinking as much as she could as fast as she could. This could only end well.

"I don't want a monkey cooler," Ben complained. "I don't care how cool a monkey is--hey!" he said, interrupting himself and glaring at the bartender. "Stop putting monkeys in my drink!"

Karla couldn't hold it in anymore. Setting her glass aside, she began laughing uproariously in her chair. "I paid him..." she giggled, "...garnish...your drinks...bet with Ender..."

"You are all terrible people," Ben declared, "and as punishment I'll...finish your drink."

He grabbed for it. That'd show her!

It would, actually!

"Hey!" she protested, swiping for the drink and missing by a mile. "What am I supposed to drink now?!"
