Riften, Skyrim, Wednesday Afternoon/Evening

In comparison to Rorikstead, Riften is a metropolis. Though it has diminished somewhat in glory since the Civil War begun, it remains a large city set in the warmest part of Skyrim. That last part is evident also in the enormous amount of foliage - technically the Autumnal Forest starts just outside Riften's doors, but in reality, trees are found everywhere in the city.

Water, too: Riften was built partly on top of Lake Honrich, and the lake provides both trade lanes and an ever-present source of food for the city.

Travelling to Riften

The road from Rorikstead to Riften is long, and will take you through a fair deal of inner Skyrim's many landscapes. Tundra, then rivers, then forest. Ancient fortresses pass on by, and new settlements. Sometimes, you can see the shadow of a dragon flying high above... or the sound of clashing swords as local heroes take on bandits.

Edward wasn't going after no bandits, no thank you. He still had a shiner on one eye from the last ones he'd met that morning.

So he was hanging on the edge of one cart as they went through the landscape, and appreciated exactly none of it.

It might not have been possible to take in the sight of absolutely everything, but Cosette was trying anyway. She was all but dangling over the side of the cart in her wide-eyed amazement at . . . all of it, really, but especially when she caught sight of a dragon shadow.

Reading wasn't really Scott's preferred pastime, but he'd stumbled across a copy of Lycanthropic Legends of Skyrim (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Lycanthropic_Legends_of_Skyrim) and was currently absorbed in that rather than watching the scenery go by.

At some point, Cosette had to take a break from her wide-eyed gawking at everything, because her neck was starting to complain.

"Hello, Scott. Have you found something interesting?" she asked.

Because of course she would notice if there were books around.

"I, um. Kinda? Yeah?" there was a brief flash of panic in his eyes at being caught with a book about werewolves before he remembered they weren't even in Fandom right now, let alone Beacon Hills. Reading a book that spoke of them as more than just fictional creatures wasn't going to make anyone suspicious. Well. He hoped.

"It's about, um. Werewolves?" he admitted, showing her the cover.

Anakin had his head out of the cart, watching the dragon with avid eyes.

He'd grown up with tales of krayt dragons--seeing a dragon in person was amazing.

Gwen was aware by now that she was so spoiled in certain ways, and was glad to be moving on to someplace with hopefully better bathroom-type facilities. Plus, the ride to the new place was pretty freaking cool so forgive her just staring out the window unless someone got her attention.

The Bee and Barb (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Bee_and_Barb) is considerably larger than Frostfruit, warmer, and built out of sturdy wood. Its rooms are larger and more lavish as a result, provide a tub of their own - though you'll have to go downstairs to get heated water for it - and even have their own small walled-off bucket-toilet area. Said bucket-toilet actually has a comfortable seat and is cleaned out twice a day, so that's a step up, isn't it?

There are either two twin beds or one queen bed to a room. Minor healing and resistance to frost potions are provided in the room, and the maid makes sure there's lavender flowers in each room, providing a pleasant smell.

Common Room

The Bee and Barb's common room (https://tespostcards.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/inside-the-bee-and-barb.jpg) is larger than Frostfruit's, and while it doesn't contain a central fire pit, there are sconces everywhere keeping the place at a comfortable level of heat. It doesn't hurt that Riften is much further south than Rorikstead, either.

Serving you is the Argonian Talen-Jei (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Talen-Jei) and his equally-lizardlike barkeeper Keerava (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Keerava). Neither peddles in dog meat, but many of the other delicacies of Skyrim (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Food) are available. The local specialty is cheese - and fish. Lots and lots of fish.

The Bee and Barb is a popular place, and you'll find many Nords drifting in and out of the common room during the evening. Most notably, the warrior Mjoll the Lioness (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Mjoll_the_Lioness) likes to sit here during the evenings, telling tales of her travels in Riften.

Cosette had several different cheeses and grilled leeks on a plate, as well as a bowl of cabbage potato soup, and settled down in the common room to watch people for the evening. Every now and then a faint frown would cross her face, but she always managed to shake it off fairly quickly -- this inn was much cleaner and more welcoming than the Sergeant of Waterloo had been, if fairly primitive in comparison. It would be hard to conflate the two in her mind.

Besides, there was no one to stop her from sitting and listening to Mjoll's stories, was there?

Apparently it was a day for sitting around on his ass. Flick didn't think anyone would mind, though. It was a vacation, right? He'd grabbed some water to drink and was tucked into a corner, trying not to doze off.

Okay. After days of lifting rocks, thatching roofs and whatnot, Barry was getting twitchy. He missed his lab and his experiments. And technology in general.

Which is why he commandeered a corner of the common room and was projecting movies from his tablet up on a makeshift screen made from some white linen.

Okay not really movies but meta for Mystery Science Theater 3000.

And since popcorn wasn't to be found on the menu, Barry just settled for an apple and a cheese wedge.

"We got movie sign," he said cheerfully and leaned back in his chair with his feet up on another.

Mara settled into the common room with her comlink, some trashy Face Loran fanfic, a fluffy novel on its screen, and a cup of hot wine.

She quickly learned that she didn't like hot wine. At all.

While Gwen missed the fire pit from am ambiance perspective, it was nice to be warm and not be as scared of the food menu. So she got some food and settled in to watch everything.

Maybe mostly Barry's movie, but whatever.

Exploring Riften

It's late enough that it's dark out, and most of the stores have closed down. Still, the city itself is well-lit, and there's plenty of opportunities for entertainment to be found.

Don't want to dine at the Bee and Barb? You can find food elsewhere. Most of the stalls are closed, but in the fishery district, there are still plenty of places where you can buy grilled salmon steaks or mudcrab legs (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Mudcrab_Legs). You can find tables overlooking the water and the far-away forests around the district, too.

Drinks

Or maybe you'd rather see what else Riften has to offer in terms of drinking and amusement. The Black-Briar Meadery (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Black-Briar_Meadery) is famous throughout Skyrim; grab a few bottles here and then retreat to the balcony, where you can party with the hard-working workers of the meadery.

Or you could explore the city itself. Half of Riften - the Dryside - is built on the banks of the Lake Honrich, near the beautiful Autumnal Forest. In fact, the forest itself encroaches on the city, as you can find many beautiful trees throughout the Dryside. It's separated from the Dockside region by a large canal. The Dockside itself has been constructed on top of the lake, sitting on large poles well above the water.
