Riften, Skyrim, Wednesday Afternoon/Evening

In comparison to Rorikstead, Riften is a metropolis. Though it has diminished somewhat in glory since the Civil War begun, it remains a large city set in the warmest part of Skyrim. That last part is evident also in the enormous amount of foliage - technically the Autumnal Forest starts just outside Riften's doors, but in reality, trees are found everywhere in the city.

Water, too: Riften was built partly on top of Lake Honrich, and the lake provides both trade lanes and an ever-present source of food for the city.

Scott nodded. "Especially in a place like this," he said. "I mean, people here seem really into getting in to fights, but what if there's a farmer who just wants to like, grow some cabbages but he also gets kinda hairy and fangy on full moons, and there's all these people with swords running around..."

Cosette pointed back down the road. "In fact, there are several of them running around now! And then, imagine, if that were me and I did tell a stranger who wrote about it, so everyone who read the book would know -- no, I wouldn't care for that."

Well, she hadn't scoffed at the idea that there were werewolves out there much more interested in lacrosse farming than killing people, so Scott was gonna take that as a good sign. He was also going to spare a nervous glance for the band of adventurers Cosette pointed out, hoping they didn't have any way of like, magically detecting who was a werewolf or whatever. Enhanced healing or not, he wasn't looking to go out and get himself stabbed with a sword, thank you. "I hope the author at least told people that's what he was planning to do," he said. "I mean, I don't know if I'd just tell random people either, but- maybe if I thought it would make people realize that werewolves aren't all bad guys?" No, he definitely didn't have a personal stake in this completely hypothetical argument.

Her father was a huge, potentially intimidating man who loved gardening, so of course Cosette was willing to entertain the notion that werewolves could have priorities that didn't involve mayhem and death.

"I would hope so. It would only be polite if he did, though I wouldn't be surprised if people feared otherwise," she decided, nodding firmly. "I wonder if that was what he had in mind? Do you think he wanted to give people that idea, that they oughtn't assume the worst?"

"This guy mostly seems interested in whether the werewolves can help him fight off the bad guys in his home country," Scott said. "But there is one chapter in here where he talks about someone who just wanted to live in the mountains away from everyone." The player cheerfully makes up because Skyrim books are woefully short for obvious reasons but there could totally be more there Which, you know, Scott would rather live in some place with wifi, but he could still sort of sympathize.

Cosette could understand that. She'd gotten pretty attached to internet access herself.

"The mountains here are lovely, I will say," she commented with a nod. "If one were to choose a place to stay for the rest of their life, one could certainly do far worse. But even if one had chosen it, I can't help but think how sad it would be for someone to be all alone for so long."

She bit her lip, clearly more than a little bit upset by even the hypothetical idea of forced hermitage. Because she was a giant softie.

"I don't think I'd like to be alone," Scott admitted, "but if it came to that- especially if sticking around meant my friends might get hurt? I might do something like that."

Cosette gave him a smile. "That's very thoughtful of you, but I hope it wouldn't come to that, were you in that situation." Because this was totally hypothetical, right? "Though if it did, I would simply have to take it upon myself to be sad on your behalf."

She sighed. "And, to think about it, I suppose I would do the same if it were me."

"I'd visit you," Scott blurted. "Or- send letters, somehow, if visiting would be too dangerous. So you wouldn't get lonely."

"Oh! You're right, it would be safe enough to entertain visitors most days of the month, wouldn't it? That's what the stories I've read seem to say, anyway," Cosette said. Was it sad that she honestly seemed relieved to know that? "I'd be happy to come by and call on you every so often if it were the other way around, in that case. And there's always the phone -- I know how to use it now for so many things, thank you for showing me -- though I'd have to make sure to be living all alone, but somewhere that it will still work. So it wouldn't be completely dreadful after all."
