Endor [Tuesday, December 30]

Luke, sadly for those who were not, was totally a morning person. As soon as the sun rose above the horizon, he was up, trying to get everyone ready for another day of hut building and bridge hanging.

There was breakfast and really ~~awful~~ strong coffee, and then the hike back to where they'd been working all of yesterday.

Luke would understand if people took breaks to explore today. Three solid days of manual labor is no vacation.

Jaina rolled her eyes, taking a seat somewhere near his feet. "I'm trying to apologize, you know."

"How would I know?" John wondered. "I'm not suddenly telepathic, though that would be pretty awesome."

This was more difficult than she'd thought it would be. "Look, I'm sorry, it had nothing to do with you. There, no telepathy needed."

"Okay then," he replied, not sure he had anything to say that wouldn't escalate the situation, given he was trying to be on vacation.

This was not going as expected, and Jaina wasn't sure she wanted to take disappointment due to a failed apology on top of everything else. "I'm trying here," she said quietly.

"So, since you're trying everything is good again?" John wondered, not bitterly, just confusedly.

"No, I'm trying to make it good again. It can't work if you don't want to hear it."

"Sure, I've got nothing but time here," John said, tucking his hands behind his head. "I can listen."

It said a lot that she was even trying to explain herself when she had a feeling he didn't care. "I've gotten really used to losing people," she said. "Mostly violently, and suddenly. And it makes me not want to get too attached. So when I do, and they leave voluntarily, it doesn't sit well." And against all better judgment, she added, "And it doesn't help that there are going to be more and more goodbyes like that."

He hadn't expected her to actually try to explain, which was probably obvious when he suddenly pushed himself up on his elbows to look at her. "So there's no staying in touch?"

At least now she seemed to have his attention. "He works like my mother," Jaina said, having been making that comparison for the last year, at least. "My bet's that he'll get one letter out before work eats him alive and I never hear from him again."

"I don't think that's true," John replied, shaking his head. "And even if it was, what, you give up rather than try?"

"I'm mad," she said simply.

John wasn't sure he wanted her to answer what he was about to say, but while she was trying he thought he should ask. "Are you gonna be mad at me?"

"No," she said, not exactly looking at him. "I know to be prepared for that."

John didn't find any relief in that, so he ignored her response. "Well, when you get over being mad at him, Karal wanted me to tell you he'd still like for you to visit his home."

She hadn't expected to actually feel worse after coming to apologize. "We'll see," she said, moving to stand. "I'll leave you alone."

"Why are you leaving now?" he asked.

She paused, but thought the answer was obvious. "You don't really seem to want me around."

"No," John said slowly. "I just get that there's nothing I can do to help you, no matter how much I want to, but I guess I said the wrong thing again."

Jaina resumed her sitting position, giving him a funny look. "And you're getting this where?"

"Come on, how many times lately have you gotten upset about something and I've made it worse?" Far too many in John's mind.

She actually had to think about it. "I don't recall you ever making it worse..." Maybe the Jacen comment. And yet they still went dirty later.

"There have been times," he was sure of it.

She shook her head. "You're not making anything worse," she told him.
