Endor [Tuesday, December 30]

Luke, sadly for those who were not, was totally a morning person. As soon as the sun rose above the horizon, he was up, trying to get everyone ready for another day of hut building and bridge hanging.

There was breakfast and really ~~awful~~ strong coffee, and then the hike back to where they'd been working all of yesterday.

Luke would understand if people took breaks to explore today. Three solid days of manual labor is no vacation.

"I don't think that's true," John replied, shaking his head. "And even if it was, what, you give up rather than try?"

"I'm mad," she said simply.

John wasn't sure he wanted her to answer what he was about to say, but while she was trying he thought he should ask. "Are you gonna be mad at me?"

"No," she said, not exactly looking at him. "I know to be prepared for that."

John didn't find any relief in that, so he ignored her response. "Well, when you get over being mad at him, Karal wanted me to tell you he'd still like for you to visit his home."

She hadn't expected to actually feel worse after coming to apologize. "We'll see," she said, moving to stand. "I'll leave you alone."

"Why are you leaving now?" he asked.

She paused, but thought the answer was obvious. "You don't really seem to want me around."

"No," John said slowly. "I just get that there's nothing I can do to help you, no matter how much I want to, but I guess I said the wrong thing again."

Jaina resumed her sitting position, giving him a funny look. "And you're getting this where?"

"Come on, how many times lately have you gotten upset about something and I've made it worse?" Far too many in John's mind.

She actually had to think about it. "I don't recall you ever making it worse..." Maybe the Jacen comment. And yet they still went dirty later.

"There have been times," he was sure of it.

She shook her head. "You're not making anything worse," she told him.

"Just yesterday," he pointed out.

"I was upset to begin with," she said slowly. She'd cop to her own bitchiness in trying to figure out how he was seeing what she didn't realize she was putting out there. "I was kind of determined to be upset irregardless."

"So, you were gonna be pissed at me no matter what?" he clarified.

"Not at you," Jaina said. "Just pissed in general. I needed to work it out, I guess. Or argue and then start overthinking. Whichever."

"Which means you didn't need me there poking and wondering at you." Meaning he made it worse.

"No," she said. "The last thing I want is you censoring yourself because you think- wrongly, by the way- that it's making things worse. You know what, sometimes people say the wrong things. But your track record there's pretty good. And at any rate, you try."

"I guess," he shrugged, a little embarrassed and not intending to get her to boost his ego here or anything.

"Are we okay?" she asked. "Really."

"Should we not be?"

"I don't know," she admitted. "I didn't realize that was an issue." Which she kind of felt like an idiot about now.

"I didn't know it was either," he agreed. "I mean, I know I've been kinda forced to think a lot lately about what's coming and I'm kinda concerned."
