Endor [Tuesday, December 30]

Luke, sadly for those who were not, was totally a morning person. As soon as the sun rose above the horizon, he was up, trying to get everyone ready for another day of hut building and bridge hanging.

There was breakfast and really ~~awful~~ strong coffee, and then the hike back to where they'd been working all of yesterday.

Luke would understand if people took breaks to explore today. Three solid days of manual labor is no vacation.

"Come on, how many times lately have you gotten upset about something and I've made it worse?" Far too many in John's mind.

She actually had to think about it. "I don't recall you ever making it worse..." Maybe the Jacen comment. And yet they still went dirty later.

"There have been times," he was sure of it.

She shook her head. "You're not making anything worse," she told him.

"Just yesterday," he pointed out.

"I was upset to begin with," she said slowly. She'd cop to her own bitchiness in trying to figure out how he was seeing what she didn't realize she was putting out there. "I was kind of determined to be upset irregardless."

"So, you were gonna be pissed at me no matter what?" he clarified.

"Not at you," Jaina said. "Just pissed in general. I needed to work it out, I guess. Or argue and then start overthinking. Whichever."

"Which means you didn't need me there poking and wondering at you." Meaning he made it worse.

"No," she said. "The last thing I want is you censoring yourself because you think- wrongly, by the way- that it's making things worse. You know what, sometimes people say the wrong things. But your track record there's pretty good. And at any rate, you try."

"I guess," he shrugged, a little embarrassed and not intending to get her to boost his ego here or anything.

"Are we okay?" she asked. "Really."

"Should we not be?"

"I don't know," she admitted. "I didn't realize that was an issue." Which she kind of felt like an idiot about now.

"I didn't know it was either," he agreed. "I mean, I know I've been kinda forced to think a lot lately about what's coming and I'm kinda concerned."

"Concerned how?" She was almost afraid to ask.

He really hadn't expected to be talking about this at all ever. "You know."

"Pretend I don't." She actually didn't.

"That as soon as I make a decision that'll be that." He thought if he was vague enough it would be like he didn't have doubts.

"That doesn't have to be a bad thing," she pointed out.

"I don't see how." Given John's choices consisted of going to the college of his choice, the college of his family's choice, and getting disowned by joining the Air Force, he wasn't sure how any of this would leave things with them.

"I have faith in you to make whatever it is, work. That's how." Made sense to her.

"So you want things to work out?" This is what he got for being vague.

She blinked a few times, a little surprised by that. "With us? Of course." She didn't even need to think about that.

Yesterday had gotten him worried about a write-off. "That's...good to hear," he actually smiled despite his dislike of intense conversations.
