Endor [Tuesday, December 30]

Luke, sadly for those who were not, was totally a morning person. As soon as the sun rose above the horizon, he was up, trying to get everyone ready for another day of hut building and bridge hanging.

There was breakfast and really ~~awful~~ strong coffee, and then the hike back to where they'd been working all of yesterday.

Luke would understand if people took breaks to explore today. Three solid days of manual labor is no vacation.

"Are we okay?" she asked. "Really."

"Should we not be?"

"I don't know," she admitted. "I didn't realize that was an issue." Which she kind of felt like an idiot about now.

"I didn't know it was either," he agreed. "I mean, I know I've been kinda forced to think a lot lately about what's coming and I'm kinda concerned."

"Concerned how?" She was almost afraid to ask.

He really hadn't expected to be talking about this at all ever. "You know."

"Pretend I don't." She actually didn't.

"That as soon as I make a decision that'll be that." He thought if he was vague enough it would be like he didn't have doubts.

"That doesn't have to be a bad thing," she pointed out.

"I don't see how." Given John's choices consisted of going to the college of his choice, the college of his family's choice, and getting disowned by joining the Air Force, he wasn't sure how any of this would leave things with them.

"I have faith in you to make whatever it is, work. That's how." Made sense to her.

"So you want things to work out?" This is what he got for being vague.

She blinked a few times, a little surprised by that. "With us? Of course." She didn't even need to think about that.

Yesterday had gotten him worried about a write-off. "That's...good to hear," he actually smiled despite his dislike of intense conversations.

"I kind of don't even think about that part," Jaina said, now wondering if she should have been, oops. "I mean, it's going to suck. I know that. But if we're meant to work it out, then we're going to work it out."

"We seem to be suffering from role reversal here," John replied. "Isn't it my job to be the optimist?"

"Yes. But remember, I'm the realist," she nodded.

"Well, that's an even better sign," John decided.

"See, trust me on this one," she said with a little smile.

"What was that?" John asked, cupping his ear. "I couldn't hear you."

This was much better. "Getting deaf in your old age," she noted, and raised her voice. "I said, trust me on this."

"I think you're the older one here," John reminded her. "And, silly me, I was trying to get you to come closer."

"Why make it easy on you when I can tease?" she asked, but did get up just enough to sit beside him.

He sat up fully, if a little slower than normal, internally cursing Gavin's fist for finding the perfect spot to make him ache all evening. "When it benefits you to."

"Point," she said, watching him. "You okay?"
