SPRING BREAK, Cyseal, Monday Morning

Good morning, Fandom!

And a good one it was: the sun was shining brightly, infusing the city with warmth. Birds were singing, and a gentle breeze wafted through town (it only faintly smelled like sulfur up in the northern quarters).

Time to get up, explore Cyseal, and make friends with the neighbors!

King Crab Tavern

This large inn is a beautiful construction of ornate brickwork, with flowers hanging off of every available surface on the outside. There's still no sign of adventurers at the door, but then it's early days - and a tour guide will most certainly be waiting for your shortly after breakfast.

King Crab Tavern - Rooms

The rooms are upstairs, modestly outfitted but spacious. There is a double bed or set of twin beds in each room, a bath with a privacy screen, a wardrobe (with time-and-place appropriate clothing included) and a desk. There are plenty of candles, and beautiful paintings hang off the walls.

King Crab Tavern - Common Room

Within, large red curtains separate the various booths and tables from the rest of the inn; while they are usually open, they may be closed if privacy is wished for. To the left, there is a large bar which covers the entire L-shaped curve of the back wall. There is the constant, comforting rumble of people chattering; the decor, the fireplace (with bear fur rug) and the candles speak of an intrinsic welcoming warmth. A grey tomcat wanders around the floor, sweet and clever.

He stared at the cat.

King Crab Tavern - Bar

The bar does not just serve drinks (though in Cyseal, they are not particularly interested in age limits), but it also serves food for the guests staying at the King Crab. At this time during the day, you can buy a variety of breakfast food, though the locals largely favor cheeses and eggs.

Cyseal

The city of Cyseal makes a beautiful picture indeed, all greenery, hand-hewn stone, sunshine and wandering chickens.

Cyseal - Market

Just down the stairs from the King Crab, you'll find the Cyseal marketplace. It's frequented as much by gulls as it is by people, but during the day, it's always busy. Nearest to the inn are all the food stands, selling fresh fish, vegetables and cheeses. (The cheese vendor can't resist yelling out an escalating series of cheese puns as people walk by.)

A little further away, you'll find the potion shop, which sells anything from mushrooms to air- and fire resistance potions, to potions that will temporarily boost your dexterity or intelligence ("potions to enmuscle you! Scrolls to entussle you!", the saleswoman yells), to lockpicks and armoring tools. It's also possible to buy weapons a few stands over (though no, the teachers won't let you bring home that fire wand), and in the middle of the market a rooster sits on a pillow, preening, as he waits for the artist to return to finish his portrait.

Perhaps don't ask.

There was a cheesemonger. Punning at her. Kathy was having the best day ever and it wasn't even noon yet. "Pretty mild joke," she noted, watching him shred a hard cheese over a small scale. "You're going to have to do grater than that to get customers. This looks like a pretty sharp crowd."

Lucille ended up wandering around the market, wrinking her nose slightly at the bad cheese puns before the weapon stand caught her attention. The seller eventually gave her an annoyed look when she had been examining the knives for quite some time without buying one. She moved on, stopping for a while outside the potions shop without entering.

Hannibal chuckled at the cheese puns, stopped to talk to the vendor, traded a few puns, and came away with samples of quite a few cheeses.

He wasn't sure if he'd get more later, but it was worth a bit of testing, anyway.

Cyseal - Thelyron's House of Healing

Just down from the market, you'll find the local hospital, administered by an old fellow named Thelyron. It has several beds available, excellent care, and an inexplicable skeleton and torture rack sitting in the lobby.

Again, perhaps don't ask. He does keep adorable sheep out back, though.

Cyseal - Theater Grounds

Past the market, you'll find the camp where all of Cyseal's great thespians hole up. There are various stages across the field, some occupied, some not; crowd filters in and out to listen to the performance, settling down on wooden benches, or sometimes the grass.

Today, a jester is putting on a farcical show on the big stage. He tells some mightily good Dad Jokes.

Cyseal - Town Hall Library

Town Hall itself is not particularly interesting, as it houses only the Mayor. However, upstairs, his adopted daughter Victoria - an unusually well-spoken orc - has put together an enormous library, containing tomes on topics ranging from Rivellon geography to the various schools of magic and Sourcery practiced in this land. Or you could pick up a book of jokes, or some exciting fiction!

The incredibly tall Victoria herself can be spotted roaming the halls, happily twitching her tail and ducking her head as to not gore any bookcases with her horns. She's enthusiastic and full of energy, and loves her books.

Cyseal - Barracks

These are the Legion's local barracks. While you may not be allowed to enter the building itself, most days, the soldiers are training outside in the yard. With the decidedly hardassed drill sergeant leading the fray, it's a sight to see.

Cyseal - Legionnaire Camp

Opposite the barracks is the current encampment of the Legion. The main area is quiet today, but some days, one might find legionnaires sitting outside, getting ready for an expedition. Sometimes, they might even be looking for help - but not today.

Walking through the camp, you'll find warm fires and young legionnaires, training, chatting, or perhaps just making some food.

Cyseal - The Docks

Down further south, you'll find the docks, where fishermen and soldiers alike are checking their hauls or readying their cargo. If you're lucky, someone might sell you some fresh fish for half the price of the markets, too.

Cyseal - The Beach

Take the stairs down and cross a bridge, and you'll find yourself at a fairly pristine piece of beach. It is not terribly busy, and the water is nice and warm. If you decide to go swimming, though, you might want to be careful around the shipwrecks lining the coast not far up.

Cyseal - Streets

Of course, you could simply choose to wander around Cyseal all day. The sun is warm, and for a medieval-esque city, it's quite gorgeous and not at all stinky. Purple flowers decorate the sides of the roads, and large trees loom overhead. All the while, you can hear the birds singing and the people chatting.

Outside Cyseal

Large parts of the area surrounding Cyseal is not open for travel due to various calamities. The local authorities are attempting to gauge how well their visitors might hold up, so on the first day, they're sending some soldiers along to show off some of the safer, greener areas.

Outside Cyseal - Follow the Tour

The tour goes up north, taking a brief moment to pass by the ruins of Cyseal's last, disastrous attempt at expansion, before heading up the hills into the woods. It's even greener out here than in town, with trees and grass sticking up everywhere, even between the heavy rocks of the hills. Here and there, small brooks pass by the road, and the birds are singing.

At the end of the path, there are four ornate shrines, arranged in a circle: each looks almost demonic, and the large faces embedded in the stone hum with the color of their dedicated element: fire, water, air, and earth. Your guides won't let you get much closer, but there are benches just off to the side of the shrine square where you can sit and enjoy the atmosphere

Outside Cyseal - Wander Off The Path

Maybe you want to stop by a brook. Maybe you want to duck into that abandoned village and poke around. If you abandon the tour, there's a likelihood that you'll confront bandits in the ruins - or the odd reanimated skeleton. Be careful.

It's mostly desolate out there in the parts they don't show you.

Outside Cyseal - Poke At The Shrines

They told you not to. They really did tell you not to.

Each individual shrine has a voice; if you come to close, they'll attempt to trick you, either by convincing you that they can somehow give you powers (woe, woe the poor guy convinced by the air shrine that he could fly) or by trying to talk you into hitting them with some power or object made of their element.

Please don't hit them with their element. There are actual (albeit weak) demons locked inside, here. And they always lie.
