SPRING BREAK, Cyseal, Monday Morning

Good morning, Fandom!

And a good one it was: the sun was shining brightly, infusing the city with warmth. Birds were singing, and a gentle breeze wafted through town (it only faintly smelled like sulfur up in the northern quarters).

Time to get up, explore Cyseal, and make friends with the neighbors!

Outside Cyseal

Large parts of the area surrounding Cyseal is not open for travel due to various calamities. The local authorities are attempting to gauge how well their visitors might hold up, so on the first day, they're sending some soldiers along to show off some of the safer, greener areas.

Outside Cyseal - Follow the Tour

The tour goes up north, taking a brief moment to pass by the ruins of Cyseal's last, disastrous attempt at expansion, before heading up the hills into the woods. It's even greener out here than in town, with trees and grass sticking up everywhere, even between the heavy rocks of the hills. Here and there, small brooks pass by the road, and the birds are singing.

At the end of the path, there are four ornate shrines, arranged in a circle: each looks almost demonic, and the large faces embedded in the stone hum with the color of their dedicated element: fire, water, air, and earth. Your guides won't let you get much closer, but there are benches just off to the side of the shrine square where you can sit and enjoy the atmosphere

Kathy was admittedly curious about the shrines. She respected the warnings to stay away from them, but that didn't stop her from wanting to know why. They looked creepy, yeah, but who were they supposed to be? What did they represent? Why have a shrine here if the guides were happier to avoid the statues entirely?

This place needed a couple of handy plaques.

This trip proved to be quite interesting. Lucille followed the path, stopping at ruins and running her hands along huge rocks, imagining herself to be on an adventure. How wonderful it would be if Thomas was here with her.

Cosima went along on the tour, enjoying the trees and wildlife, but kept a respectful distance from the shrines. The part of her that wanted to poke them for science! was outweighed by the part of her that was neither crazy nor suicidal.

Maybe you want to stop by a brook. Maybe you want to duck into that abandoned village and poke around. If you abandon the tour, there's a likelihood that you'll confront bandits in the ruins - or the odd reanimated skeleton. Be careful.

It's mostly desolate out there in the parts they don't show you.

Dante had found himself strolling around with the tour mostly to have something to do; his terrible mood hadn't completely dissipated overnight, and very little seemed appealing.

Which was how he eventually wound up wandering off the path.

If that meant he'd wind up bumping into something ugly on the way, navigating between these burned-out houses? Whatever. He could use a good fight.

Or he could end up with company! And wasn't that possibility exciting?

Though, said company was at least smart enough to shove a lumpy pizza at him before speaking. It was closer to flatbread covered in cheese and sauce than something they'd get at Pizza Planet, but Kathy figured it was close enough that it might help break through the grumpiness.

"Took the food, didn't I?" Dante said.

Stuffed some of the pizza in his mouth, too.

"Funny enough, one doesn't negate the other," Kathy pointed out. "So, what's got you all out of sorts anyway. There was a pun-making cheesemonger in the market square and I don't think you even noticed."

Lucille had made the mistake of being very adventurous and leaving the tour to look at some ruins. Peeking around a corner she had seen a skeleton moving around. Yes, moving around. Which was why she was now running back in the direction of the path, stumbling in her long skirts and not noticing that annoying boy until he was right ahead of her. If he wasn't moving away quickly she might even stumble into him.

Dante did move in time, but only just-- taking a single side-step right before she flew on past. "Watch out!"

Lucille, who once she saw him had tried to stop, now stumbled and fell. It would have been embarrassing in front of anyone, but particularly him, so she snapped:

"What are you doing standing around daydreaming?"

Dante stared at her. "Fuck you too," he said cheerfully. "You catch your own reflection in the mirror or what?"

She snorted, pushing herself to her feet. "If you're just standing here enjoying the view I'd let you know it's a lot better over there." She pointed in the direction from where she had been running, not expecting him to be stupid enough to believe her.

Cara had deliberately wandered off the path, the tour guide blathering on about the dangers off the beaten track had pretty much guaranteed she would.

She was on holiday, she could pick fights with bandits and the undead if she wanted to.

"I'm on holiday, I can pick fights with demon-dead and idiots if I want to," Surreal practically sang, echoing Cara's narrative cheerfully as she played with the knives she had (visibly) equipped. "Mind you, I'd rather be doing so in a city, sugar, but even I can make-do in the great outdoors if I must."

"But if we were in the city, we'd have to deal with the guard afterward," Cara pointed out, which would ruin the good mood she was finally in. "Because clearly when they ambushed us they were just trying to be friendly."

"You only have to deal with the guard if they catch you," Surreal pointed out, her smile sharp and unrepentantly predatory. "A lack of bodies can make that difficult."

Surreal enjoyed killing Bad People; she especially enjoyed killing them in a manner that sent a message. But she was perfectly capable of completely incinerating a body with her Craft if she had to.

"There's just so much...green," she continued, flicking a leaf out of her face. "It itches."

"Even if there's not the guard, there's the squirrels. Even if I don't care about what they say, reports about 'heroics' gets me less lectures about being a good example than ones picking fights in the street." What was Cara's life that she could say that?

She grinned and bumped her shoulder against Surreal's, if they weren't actively looking for a fight, she'd probably have gone for actual hand holding. "I'll make sure to scrub all the green off you when we get back tot he tavern."

Cara's feelings on the wilderness were more mixed than Surreal's, but she was always going to pick the hot bath at the end of the day over the cold lake.

Merrill hadn't wandered off the path on purpose. She really, really hadn't. It was just that the abandoned village fascinated her though not in the same way it did some creepy eggs and she had to go take a look. To see what clues, if any, had been left behind as to its history.

And then when she looked up, the tour was gone.

"Oh. Oh, dear."

Skaar was annoyed. He was expecting monsters. Adventure. Things to smash. The closest he had found so far was some bandits who he could scare easily.

He still punched them. But he really pulled his punches so he didn't explode them or something.

Outside Cyseal - Poke At The Shrines

They told you not to. They really did tell you not to.

Each individual shrine has a voice; if you come to close, they'll attempt to trick you, either by convincing you that they can somehow give you powers (woe, woe the poor guy convinced by the air shrine that he could fly) or by trying to talk you into hitting them with some power or object made of their element.

Please don't hit them with their element. There are actual (albeit weak) demons locked inside, here. And they always lie.
