SPRING BREAK, Cyseal, Monday Morning

Good morning, Fandom!

And a good one it was: the sun was shining brightly, infusing the city with warmth. Birds were singing, and a gentle breeze wafted through town (it only faintly smelled like sulfur up in the northern quarters).

Time to get up, explore Cyseal, and make friends with the neighbors!

Kathy saw the eyeroll. Normally, she'd just let that go, but she was irked. "Did you start off life being this rude or was it something you really had to work at?" she asked.

"We can't all laugh at the jokes of cheese mongers," Lucille replied. "Sadly, I have to let you know that is an acquired taste."

There was really no point in answering the question, after all.

"And since you're still busy acquiring manners, I can see why you didn't rate the humor upgrade," Kathy snapped. "I'd rather laugh with a cheesemonger than be a bitter, miserable person who looks like she's permanently sucking on a lemon. Fortunately, you seem to have that position quite handily filled."

Manners involved being able to mock people while sounding perfectly polite. Lucille was good at that when she needed to be.

"The choice is between laughing at bad jokes and being miserable? Your philosophy of life sounds truly fascinating."

Kathy would argue that manners involved treating people like they were deserving of respect. Maybe that was what happened when you weren't raised in an attic your whole life?

"I can only imagine what yours is like," Kathy said with a fake smile she didn't even try to pass off as genuine. "I can only assume it has to do with belittling people in a desperate attempt to feel less small."

She gave Lucille a long, deliberate once over, taking her in from head to toe. "You still have a lot of work on that score, I'm guessing."

Lucille would argue that very few people deserved respect, but that might have something to do with the attic experience too.

Lucille gave Kathy an unimpressed look. "Is that what you think?"

Valid point!

"Yes, but I'll admit, I'm only basing that on the ways you behave in every single interaction I've ever observed," Kathy assured her sweetly.

"You assume that my behaviour has nothing to do with you, then?" As Kathy was annoying and laughed at bad jokes, Lucille felt she had good reason to behave the way she did.

"Clearly we do not share any friends."

"That's because I have them and you don't," Kathy pointed out.

Hey now, Kathy had been minding her own business, chatting with a cheesemonger when Lucille wandered by! It would have cost her literally nothing to just continue on her way.

Why shouldn't Kathy know that she was making a fool of herself from Lucille's point of view?

"I don't?" Lucille laughed a little. She had more friends in Fandom than she had had in her whole life. "At least I don't assume you are friendless just because we disagree. I would say that is unkind."

Funny enough, so did Kathy. Her first friends had been made in Fandom; other than her younger sister, she'd never been friends with anyone before the island.

But, shh! That was one of those pesky similarities that might have encouraged them to do something other than sneer at one another. The same way that sharing their list of friends might do as well.

"Hardly," Kathy said coolly, raising an eyebrow. "I don't doubt you're lacking friends because we disagree. I think you're lacking friends because I have yet to see you act as anything other than rude, disrespectful, and condescending. And if you have managed to make friends with people on this island, I'm willing to chalk it up more to their good natures than to yours."

Obviously they could have nothing in common whatsoever.

If it hadn't been for Lucille being certain about the reason her friends choose to spend time with her -- neither Cassandra nor Jalian in particular seemed likely to pretend -- that comment would have stung. So all she said was a sarcastic: "Really?"

"Devastating retort," Kathy returned. "Maybe you'd like puns better if you had the--" She clamped her mouth down on the rest of that statement, jaw practically grinding. She wasn't a mean girl and she wouldn't let herself be baited into becoming one, either. She was a superhero, dammit.

"The what?"

Lucille would say that most people were mean, and just hid it well under layers of pretend goodness.

While Kathy would argue the opposite! Most people were good, but it was just easier to be mean.

And just because something was easier, it didn't make it right.

"It doesn't matter," Kathy said, folding her arms over her chest. "It was going to be a jerk thing to say. There's a difference in pointing out all the ways that you're being rude and just being insulting for the heck of it." She curled her lip at Lucille. "It's a difference more people should look into."

Lucille just smiled at that, and not in a particularly kind way. Kathy was clearly one of those people who told themselves they were good, and who clung to that idea of themselves no matter what they did.

"I'm sure that would be a fascinating conversation to have with your friend the cheese monger. I will leave you to it."

She turned around to leave.

Kathy bit down several parting retorts, reminding herself that she did not need to have the last word in, just because she could. Because Lucille was right; she did want to be a good person and being the kind of person she knew she was took precedence over a withering parting shot.

No matter how good that parting shot would be to deliver.

"What an excellent idea," she said tightly. "Don't let me keep you. I've had my fill of conversation, thanks."

For forever. Had her fill of talking to Lucille for forever. ~~Except I sure didn't so whatever Kathy you could deal, Lucille is amazing.~~

~~They are awesome together and Kathy is firmly on the list of Lucille's best enemies.~~

"Enjoy your cheese," Lucille replied before disappearing into the crowd.
