SPRING BREAK, Cyseal, Monday Morning

Good morning, Fandom!

And a good one it was: the sun was shining brightly, infusing the city with warmth. Birds were singing, and a gentle breeze wafted through town (it only faintly smelled like sulfur up in the northern quarters).

Time to get up, explore Cyseal, and make friends with the neighbors!

"You know these sorts of weapons?" Jalian asked. She was better at greetings then she had been, but that didn't mean she was good. "I thought your timeline already used guns."

"Oh, we do," Steve said. "The way you train a soldier seems to be pretty universal, though. Lots of yelling and standing in rows."

"And training Huntresses," Jalian agreed. "Though maybe less rows."

"Not as many Huntresses?" Steve asked, "Or are they just not as into rows at home?"

"Both," Jalian answered. "We sparred more in pairs and groups, but also ken Selvren are fewer."

She watched as one of the soldiers training took a very bad step, then was relieved when the trainer stepped in to correct them. "These seem to have a lot to learn."

"They always do, at the beginning. It takes a while for muscles to learn new stuff," Steve said. He chuckled. "I was always bringing up the rear in my unit."

"Why do they start so late?" Jalian wondered, both of these soldiers and what she'd seen of the twentieth century's. "I was learning as soon as I could walk."

"For my time, at least, it was because we didn't keep around huge standing armies," Steve said. "War came to us, so we asked every able-bodied man to sign up for the army, and if they didn't sign up, Uncle Sam sent them a draft notice and they had to show up whether they wanted to or not."

Jalian rolled her eyes at the "able-bodied man" part. "Who's Uncle Sam and what's a draft notice?"

"Uncle Sam's kind of a shorthand for talking about the American government," Steve explained, staring out at the trainees. "U.S...Uncle Sam. A draft notice comes from the government. It was becoming obvious, even before Pearl Harbor, that war was coming. The government passed a law requiring all men ages 21 to 45 to register for the draft. If your name was selected, you had to serve in the military for at least a year."

His smile turned wry. "Of course, I volunteered and they turned me down flat. A few times."

"Why?" Jalian asked. Apart from the fact that they were clearly already stupid if they wanted all the men.

"I had a few medical problems," Steve said. "Asthma, heart problems, stuff like that."
