SPRING BREAK, Cyseal, Monday Morning

Good morning, Fandom!

And a good one it was: the sun was shining brightly, infusing the city with warmth. Birds were singing, and a gentle breeze wafted through town (it only faintly smelled like sulfur up in the northern quarters).

Time to get up, explore Cyseal, and make friends with the neighbors!

"An unexpected combination," Lucille observed. "But requiring similar tools." If women in Fandom fought with knives it made sense that men would cook with them.

She looked at the potion bottle. "Perhaps I should buy one." There was probably someone she could use it against.

"They have more in common than you might think," Hannibal answered easily.

"Why not?" Hannibal gave the shopkeeper a winning smile. "I imagine if we each bought one, we could get some sort of discount. Particularly if we can't be certain it will work at home."

"They have?" Lucille asked.

At the attempt to haggle, the shopkeeper shook her head. "The price is low enough as it is. You won't find potions of this quality to the same price anywhere around here."

Perhaps because there was only one place selling potions.

Hannibal shrugged; he could probably talk her into giving them the potions for free, if he wanted to take the time, but he could think of more interesting things to do, so he took out the local currency he'd exchanged for and purchased one.

"Both require a certain knowledge of anatomy and chemistry," he said to Lucille. "As well as the ability to use sharp objects to best effect," he added with a grin.

Lucille bought the other one. She decided she could afford it, and it might prove interesting.

"It does make sense when you put it that way," she said. "I have little knowledge of any of it, I'm afraid." That was mostly true, anyway.

"It's what I usually teach," Hannibal said. "Cooking, that is; not surgery. If you're inclined to learn, you should consider taking one of my classes. And if not, I always enjoy sharing the fruits of my labors."

Lucille would not have considered a cooking class before, but Dr Lecter was intelligent and well-spoken, so she thought it would probably be worthwhile.

"I believe I would appreciate both." She smiled.

"Then you must try them both," Hannibal answered, smiling back. "I like to hold dinner parties after the island traumatizes everybody, but the one for last week was postponed due to this trip, so I'll be having one as soon as we return, as it happens."
crimson_sister: (proud)

"I would very much like to attend," Lucille replied, interpreting that as an invitation. A dinner party sounded like an event where she would feel more at ease, and should dr Lecter happen to have a piano she would offer to play.

"I would be pleased to have you," Hannibal said. "I'll be certain to have the invitations posted in plenty of time."

He didn't, as it happened, have a piano - but he did have a very nice harpsichord.
crimson_sister: (not impressed)

"Thank you," Lucille replied, smiling.

She had never played a hapsichord but would be quite eager to try, if permitted
sharp_as_knives: (oh? yes?)

Hannibal never minded letting someone else play, so long as they were respectful.

"You're very welcome." He nodded to her and to the shopkeeper and carefully pocketed the potion.

As he glanced in the other direction, his eyes fell upon the lockpicks, and he raised an eyebrow. "They do have all sorts of things, don't they?"

[personal profile] crimson_sister 2016-02-27 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Lucille saw what Dr Lecter was looking at, unsure about why he chose that. "It seems like it. Some I assume require skill though." Picking locks would have been useful while her parents were alive, but she had chosen another solution to that problem.

"One of the classes learned lockpicking earlier this semester, if I'm not mistaken." Hannibal shook his head and chuckled. "Potentially quite useful, if not entirely respectable."

"So it's not just in my time that lock picking is frowned upon?" Lucille looked a little amused.

"It's a very useful tool, and it has its place," Hannibal said, "but it's good to have different tools in your repertoire as well."

"So what other ones would you recommend?" Lucille asked. She was perhaps a little surprised by this conversation, but not in a bad way.
sharp_as_knives: (I wonder...)

Re: Cyseal - Market

[personal profile] sharp_as_knives 2016-02-28 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hannibal thought about it for a moment. He had his own preferred tools, after all, but they might not all be useful for Lucille.

"Practicality," he answered, "and flexibility. The ability to see when something different might be required, and to not discard the solution because it isn't respectable or obvious."
crimson_sister: (serious)

RE: Re: Cyseal - Market

[personal profile] crimson_sister 2016-02-28 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
Lucille pondered this briefly, then said: "I believe you are right. But it does require knowing your purpose too, doesn't it?" This conversation felt comforting, oddly enough. Perhaps because Dr Lecter didn't underestimate her intellctual capacity, but rather seemed to appreciate it.

Re: Cyseal - Market

[personal profile] sharp_as_knives 2016-02-28 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Hannibal always appreciated intelligence. And in that sort of thing, the modern world had a distinct advantage for women.

"It does," he agreed. "Perhaps the most important thing is knowing what it is you want. Knowing your own mind and heart, and being true to that, no matter what respectability - or even practicality - might dictate." He smiled. "I am a very firm believer in that."

Re: Cyseal - Market

[personal profile] crimson_sister 2016-02-29 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
Lucille had yet to discover this advantage. "It can be a struggle," she said. "Especially if convention is to be challenged."
sharp_as_knives: (sympathetic)

Re: Cyseal - Market

[personal profile] sharp_as_knives 2016-02-29 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that was interesting. Then again, convention in Lucille's time was quite restrictive in some ways; it could mean any number of things.

"It can be," Hannibal agreed. "But the accomplishment can be all the more rewarding for the challenge. And I find going against your own inclinations and needs can be infinitely more difficult, as well as less rewarding."
crimson_sister: (serious)

Re: Cyseal - Market

"Women in my time have to resort to manipulation in order to succeed in that," Lucille said. "I get the impression that this has changed somewhat."
