selfhelphero: ([zzz] newfoundland town)

St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Thursday Morning and Afternoon

The good news was, it still wasn't raining. The bad news was, it was still muddy outside. Hopefully, if you were coming out for the Habitat for Humanity build, you'd wear shoes you didn't mind getting dirty!

If you weren't heading for the build, well, there was still plenty to do, especially for those who had a thing for wildlife. Or, there were still plenty of hotel amenities to explore, and with only one day left in town, time was running out to see what the city had to offer!

Jims had been settled next to the cardboard box, which naturally led Rilla to inquire, "You can buy gorillas in Newfoundland?"

"No, but people's boyfriends can turn into gorillas in Newfoundland," Quinn commented, a bit sourly. "Puck came down with a case of animal transformation."

The baby gorilla did not seem overly unhappy about this.

"Awww, he's so cute!" Rilla squealed, crouching down to look more carefully. "He even has his strange little haircut!"

"He is pretty cute," Quinn had to admit, fondly. "And stronger than he looks. Way stronger."

Which was why she was not going to suggest he play with Jims.

"Giving him a paintbrush would probably be a terrible idea," Rilla mused aloud. "Hello, Puck!"

"I could give him one that just had water on it," Quinn mused.

Puck made chittering noises and banged two scraps of wood together. Hi, lady!

"It might keep him from climbing up onto the roof," said Rilla, who knew nothing about gorillas.

"Good thought," Quinn, who wasn't exactly a gorilla expert herself, said. "How's Jims? Is he okay just ... kind of hanging out?"

"He seems to be," Rilla said. "He's not terribly interactive right yet--mostly a lot of staring and eating and napping and diaper changes."

Motherhood was not nearly as romantic as people made it sound.

"At least you can do other stuff," Quinn said. "I'm pretty sure somebody has to watch Puck all the time."

Also not terribly romantic.

"Maybe he'll work himself into exhaustion and take a nap?" Rilla offered hopefully.

"I can hope," Quinn sighed. "...and he is kind of precious when he sleeps. Don't tell him I said that."

Rilla giggled. "Your secret is safe with me," she promised. "Has he been like this long?"

"Just since last night," Quinn said, shaking her head. "We were making plans to go out, and poof, baby gorilla."

"That's terrible," Rilla said sympathetically. "And I suppose you can't exactly take a gorilla to dinner."

"I got room service and played online all night," Quinn grumped. "Hopefully I'll come up with a better idea before tonight."

"At least the tubs are amazing?" Rilla offered. "Though a gorilla jumping into it might ruin their charm..."

[identity profile] chief-cheerio.livejournal.com 2011-10-14 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I don't want to make housekeeping clean gorilla hair out of the filter," Quinn said reluctantly. "Too bad. I love the tubs."

"I've spent a truly indecent amount of time in mine," Rilla admitted.

"It's not like we have anything like it in the dorms," Quinn shrugged. "Better enjoy it while we can."

"Oh, if we did, I'd never leave my room," Rilla replied with a giggle. "I'd be the biggest raisin ever."
