St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Thursday Morning and Afternoon

The good news was, it still wasn't raining. The bad news was, it was still muddy outside. Hopefully, if you were coming out for the Habitat for Humanity build, you'd wear shoes you didn't mind getting dirty!

If you weren't heading for the build, well, there was still plenty to do, especially for those who had a thing for wildlife. Or, there were still plenty of hotel amenities to explore, and with only one day left in town, time was running out to see what the city had to offer!

St. John's [13th of October] - Coffee Matters

[personal profile] endsthegame 2011-10-13 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
Peter and Ender had made plans to have coffee, but adjusting to the locale - as well as other things - had gotten in the way until now. Ender had gotten to the coffee place well before Peter, ordering a large black coffee and sitting down.

He watched the people as they passed by the window, realising that he felt less and less in his place on this planet as time went on. Recent developments had given him something - or someone - he did feel such attachment towards, but Earth...

Earth was starting to make him impatient.

It had taken Peter a while to get here after spending time in Topher and Kenzi's hotel room, but he was here. And curious-- curious why Ender wanted to see him so badly, curious if there was something in it for him.

He ordered a double espresso and then sank down in the seat in front of Ender. "Hey, little brother," he greeted casually. "You caused quite a fuss with the radio squirrels this morning."

"Technically, you incited the fuss," Ender said mildly. "Did you really have to make such a big deal about Ben on the radio? He's no threat to you."

Well. In a way, the way their family functioned, anyone more important to him than Peter was a threat, Ender supposed. Much like there would always be a part of Ender that might feel inclined to kill for a smile, some sign of approval from Peter.

Peter shrugged. "I didn't realise you were into that kind of thing," he said. "The puppy dog eyes and the stalking and the slight psychopathy, I mean."

Peter wanted him to correct him, Ender could tell. He wasn't going to bite. "It's none of your business," he said lightly. "But you know that. And that's not what I wanted to talk about, anyway."
lockestheway: (peter: listening to you)

"It is my business when he and his friend are planning to chase me down and shake me down for commenting on it," Peter said. His coffee arrived, and he took a sip. "At least, if Topher's to be believed."

"If they are, I'll talk to them," Ender said. But this was really not what he wanted this conversation to be about. "But I'm not here to talk about Ben. I'm here to see how you're doing, and I know you're winding yourself up to give me some screed about how you're fine or you don't need my attention, but I don't care. I want to know."

Peter opened his mouth, then shut it. "Well played," he said, finally. "Look, it's not that I mind the concern - it's nice. But I'm doing fine, kiddo--" He had no idea why he kept using names like that for Ender, but they just slipped out. "--I really don't need bi-weekly interventions."
endsthegame: (is only mildly suspicious)

"Don't call me kiddo," Ender said. Whether Peter knew it or not, it was a way to try and exert control over him.

He could also read the rest of it: You caring about me scares me. I don't want you to see me weak. Fine. Keeping Peter off balance, that was good for him, too. "And this isn't an intervention. You're my brother. I manage to get on civilly with my own version of you. But you and I keep doing this ludicrous thing where we ignore one another and then talk about each other to our friends."

Hey-- he could call Ender whatever he liked.

"I don't talk about you all that much," Peter lied. "But I'm sorry if anything I've done has led you to bring me up more. You've got a loyal bunch of friends - I'm not actually out to offend any of you, you know."

He just didn't particularly care if he did.

Mostly. Kind of.

Ender studied him for a moment.

"'We came into the world like brother and brother, and now let's go hand in hand, not one before another,'" he quoted. "I don't want to do this, Peter. You don't even want to do this, or at least you care enough to pretend not to want it. So here's the deal: we can have coffee once a week. We'll talk - about how you're doing, or how I'm doing, or how we're feeling about Kant that particular week. I don't care. That's the effort I'm willing to put in here."

He didn't put in any demands. No offers that might give Peter the idea Ender thought he had the right to dictate what he did with any of it. Peter had his pride, and Ender knew what it was like, because in his own way he had it too.

"I was trying to do that," Peter pointed out idly, but he was considering it.

It would be a good way to counteract whatever Ender's friends might put into his head, wouldn't it? "Trying to show an interest in your life, that kind of thing."

"Thanks," Ender said dismissively. "But what have you been up to?"
