Kohala Coast, Hawaii | Evening | Sunday | February 20

As the sun gave way to the moon, the lights around the Big Island started coming on, brightening up the dark sky. Night falling just meant several new ways for the guests to enjoy themselves! A slight wind ruffled the palm trees but the temperature remained warm, making it comfortable enough to take long walks on the beach or just enjoy gazing up at the clear night sky.

There was still plenty to do, though! Nighttime activities were starting to swing into motion, music was wafting along the breeze, drawing people towards it's rhythmic sounds, and the smells of Hawaiian dishes were prevalent.

It was nighttime in Hawaii and the vacation had just begun!

"Ah! That sounds nice! Is everyone okay? I didn't get to see my family when I went back; too hard to explain that I was able to catch a plane from America and then back after a single day. Moshi's staying with the Professor and Ken, though, so I don't have to worry about him."

Was he watching her?!

"How's Mila-chan doing in her classes?"

He was so, so watching her. What was she putting away...

Oh crap! Her underwear had to be in there somewhere!

Gulp.

Wait, she'd asked a question. That made an excellent distraction! (Thanks, Momoko.)

"Oh, yeah, everyone's good. Milagro even managed not to be bratty for nearly thirty minutes." He smiled fondly despite his words. "And I think she's really frustrated with math, but managing things okay?" He... felt kinda guilty not being there to help her, too.

It had totally better be in there somewhere or she was going to be SERIOUSLY upset and he would then be seeing her in bikinis more often than he'd expected. And that was a pretty high number ~~if he'd been counting strings~~.

"I'm glad everyone's okay and that you got a chance to see them. Math? Ugh. I'd offer to help, but you totally know me and math." Last pile (yes, she'd brought that much) dropped into the drawers, she nudged the drawer shut, turning to face him. He was watching her. She took a breath. "Hi."

Jaime managed to get himself under control enough to offer Momoko a slow, warm smile. "Hi."

That smile was totally not fair.

"So are you going to look at what I bought you? To see if you like them?" Momoko moved to sit on her bed, hoping that she was acting normal.

It was going to be a long week.

"Oh!"

Yeah. He should do that.

Jaime grabbed the boxes and set them on his bed before opening them.

"Shoes..."

He meant to say "yay, shoes!" there.

"So disappointed! What were you expecting?" Momoko laughed at his reaction, feeling almost instantly better. "I made you throw your old flip-flops away, remember? We didn't get to go shopping because of the blizzard and stuff, but we're in Hawaii! You need good beach shoes."

"These are flip-flops!" Jaime objected, holding them up. He could have just kept his old pair!

"Those," Momoko pulled her feet up and wrapped her arms around her knees. "Are double-cushioned, slip-resistant, odor-resistant crocs with ergonomic Italian styling and non-marking soles. And they are also only for outside beach wearing."

"And they're totally cute. Try them on!"

...

"They look like flip-flops," Jaime pointed out. But he obediently sat down and took off his shoes and socks so he could try on his new shoes.

"And I look like a totally normal girl. Lemme see, lemme see! Walk around!"

"Well, an especially cute one," Jaime countered, standing up and taking a few experimental trips across the room.

"Do you really think I'm cute?" She dropped her legs and leaned forward to watch him walk. "Ah! See! They totally are cute! And you look good in them! How do they feel? Are they 'comfortable' enough?"

Jaime rolled his eyes. "Duh." It was, after all, super-obvious to everyone, right?

"They're pretty comfy, I guess?" Actually, they might even have been more comfortable than the pair she'd made him throw away...

"'Duh' is totally not a real answer!" It was enough of one to make her grin inanely, though.

"Will they do? I mean you can't really tell until you go to the beach, but do you think they might?"

"They're probably good enough to at least give it a shot," Jaime decided with a chuckle.

He paused, then looked over at her with another warm smile. "Thanks, Momoko."

Ah, still totally not fair.

"You're welcome." She smiled back and pulled her legs back up so she had something to hug. "Ah. But now you have to take them off! Outside shoes, remember? Did you see the other pair?"

With a tolerant sigh, Jaime kicked the sandals off near his bed. "I did. They didn't look very practical..."

"What's not practical about them?" Momoko looked amused. "They're house shoes. You wear them... in the house. That's totally practical!"

...

"What if you want to leave the house?" Jaime asked. "And what's wrong with socks, anyway?"

She giggled into her knees for a minute. "Jaime. If you want to leave the house, you put on your outdoor shoes. And socks are fine too! Just not flip flops."

Jaime frowned thoughtfully. "Why would you want to change shoes just to go outside?" That sounded like a lot of work...

"Why would you want to wear your outside shoes inside?" Momoko asked. "What if you stepped in something? Or it was raining and there was mud on your shoes? especially if you didn't notice. You'd track it all over the house."

"That's why you wipe your feet," Jaime pointed out.

So his mom didn't kill him.

"Or," she smiled, "change into your house shoes. Which are already totally clean and dry!"
