As the sun gave way to the moon, the lights around the Big Island started coming on, brightening up the dark sky. Night falling just meant several new ways for the guests to enjoy themselves! A slight wind ruffled the palm trees but the temperature remained warm, making it comfortable enough to take long walks on the beach or just enjoy gazing up at the clear night sky.

There was still plenty to do, though! Nighttime activities were starting to swing into motion, music was wafting along the breeze, drawing people towards it's rhythmic sounds, and the smells of Hawaiian dishes were prevalent.

It was nighttime in Hawaii and the vacation had just begun!

Ah, still totally not fair.

"You're welcome." She smiled back and pulled her legs back up so she had something to hug. "Ah. But now you have to take them off! Outside shoes, remember? Did you see the other pair?"

With a tolerant sigh, Jaime kicked the sandals off near his bed. "I did. They didn't look very practical..."

"What's not practical about them?" Momoko looked amused. "They're house shoes. You wear them... in the house. That's totally practical!"

...

"What if you want to leave the house?" Jaime asked. "And what's wrong with socks, anyway?"

She giggled into her knees for a minute. "Jaime. If you want to leave the house, you put on your outdoor shoes. And socks are fine too! Just not flip flops."

Jaime frowned thoughtfully. "Why would you want to change shoes just to go outside?" That sounded like a lot of work...

"Why would you want to wear your outside shoes inside?" Momoko asked. "What if you stepped in something? Or it was raining and there was mud on your shoes? especially if you didn't notice. You'd track it all over the house."

"That's why you wipe your feet," Jaime pointed out.

So his mom didn't kill him.

"Or," she smiled, "change into your house shoes. Which are already totally clean and dry!"

"But then I have to have twice as many shoes!"

Actually, Jaime, no you didn't. Your shoe math was awful.

Totally awful. "It's just one extra pair, Jaime. Try them!"

Jaime picked up the shoes dubiously. Then he eyed them dubiously. Then he (dubiously) put them on. "They're... kind of comfy?" More than kinda, really."

Momoko sighed and dropped to fall back on her bed. "You're totally horrible. I give up on you. But!" She chuckled and lifted a hand to point in the air. "But! At least I threw your horrible flip-flops away!"

"I am not horrible," Jaime countered. "I am awesome!"

"Awesome people like crocs and can admit that house shoes are a totally awesome idea." She pointed her hand at him.

"Says you!"

"Says I!" She pointed at herself. "Because I am totally awesome, of course."

Not looking at him totally made it easier to pretend this was a normal evening and that she wasn't in pyjamas about to go to bed in the same room as him.

Jaime shook his head. "If you were really awesome then obviously you'd recognize my own awesomeness."

"Well, since I am totally awesome - do I hear any arguments about that? - and I say you're not meeting the qualifications, then we totally have a problem." Momoko rolled over until she was on her stomach, shifting to face him. Yes, it meant it was harder to pretend they were just hanging out as normal, but she wanted to talk to him.

"Okay, if I squint, maaaaybe you're kiiiiiind of awesome." And, she smiled as she noticed, still wearing the house shoes.

Jaime affected a rather unconvincing pout. "Only kinda?"

She sighed dramatically and shook her finger at him. "Well, you didn't like the crocs. I can only do so much with the points you've got."

"Well..." Jaime trailed off as he realized he didn't have a non-lame comeback.

She grinned, resting her head on her folded arms, just watching him.

...

Wait, was that weird?

He hoped not. He did that with her quite a lot himself.

"Well... at least my roommate is awesome?"

Oh sure. Remind her that they would be roommates for the week.

"Exactly!" Momoko pushed herself up, and busied herself with pulling the towel off her head and rubbing her hair, trying not to think. "It's totally the universe's way of keeping balance, see?"
