Endor [Monday, December 29]

Luke, a tall golden droid, and the Ewok chief Chirpa, were waiting for the volunteers when the portal finally deposited everyone on Endor. "Welcome," Luke said, giving them all a smile, "and thank you in advance for your help."

He gestured to the Ewok. "This is Chief Chirpa, the leader of Bright Tree Village, where we'll be staying for the next few days." Chirpa bowed to them, then spoke a few words. The droid shuffled forward to translate. "Chief Chirpa welcomes you to Endor," he said, words coming out pinched and precise, "and requests that you make yourself at home. If there is anything he or his warriors can do while you are assisting their neighbors, please let him know."

There was a brief conversation between Threepio and the Chief. "Or tell me and I will convey it," Threepio said. "I am C-3PO, human cyborg relations, and will be serving as translator for you during your stay here. Do watch out for the bugs, and the large drops, and the variety of creatures found in the forest..."

Luke shook his head at him and Threepio stopped speaking. "He worries a little too much," he explained with an easy smile. "If you'll follow me, you can drop off your stuff in the visitors' quarters and we can get started building some huts."

Luke was off to the side using the Force to bring lumber closer to the group of workers.

Threepio was there fretting.

Both were eager to answer questions.

John was mostly eager to see a familiar face.

"You know, I wanted to bring a gremlin along but Jaina thought it was a bad idea."

Luke burst out laughing. "That might be a little more excitement than I was planning on."

"We gotta make trouble while we can," John teased. "After we build houses here, of course."

"Oh, of course," Luke said. "You know me, a natural-born trouble maker."

No he wasn't.

Oh, look, it was that kid who thought she wasn't her. "And the Ewok babies would be where?"

"Hello, Brooke," he replied, grinning. "Most of them are back with the village, but some of the older Woklings will be around later to help us out. They'll all be around at dinnertime."

Brooke looked confused. She had no right to be. There had kind of been missing the words "babysit adorable fuzzy babies" from any and all notices about this. "But... that's at dinner. What am I supposed to do now?"

Luke nodded his head towards the piles of wood. "Build a bridge?" he suggested.

"Least I'm not ugly and stupid," Luke replied before moving to give Gavin a hug. "It's good to see you!"

"You too," Gavin said, returning the hug. "This trip came at the right time. So, nice planning."

"I'm all about proper planning," Luke agreed. "Why was it the right time?"

Dawn would have tapped Luke on the shoulder, but her hands were full. Also, sneaking up on Luke was pretty tough anyway. So she whistled cheerfully at him instead.

"Hey, you!" Luke said, coming dangerously close to crushing the packages in her hands as he tried to hug her.

She dropped her tupperware on the ground with a squeal, then hugged him back. "Hi!"

Tyler nodded a greeting. "Luke," he said. "Any particular way chaperones should help, or should I just jump in and start building?"

"Go ahead and start building," Luke said. "For the moment, I'm going to assume that the students are bright enough not to hit themselves with hammers."

Tahiri wasn't staring at this very young version of Master Skywalker, really.

Maybe there was the occasional glance if she just happened to be facing that direction, but no staring.

The hair. Wow. Holos hadn't quite done it . . . justice.

Luke glanced over and gave her a polite smile. "Jedi?" he guessed. "Are you before or after me in the timeline?"

Tahiri nearly dropped the support beam she was moving. "After. Around the same time as Jaina."

Billy looked around, shaking his head. "Gotta say Luke, glad you kicked the asses of the guys that did this."

Luke raised an eyebrow. "It was the right thing to do," he said quietly, "and what happened here was hardly the worst thing the Empire inflicted on the galaxy."
