Endor [Monday, December 29]

Luke, a tall golden droid, and the Ewok chief Chirpa, were waiting for the volunteers when the portal finally deposited everyone on Endor. "Welcome," Luke said, giving them all a smile, "and thank you in advance for your help."

He gestured to the Ewok. "This is Chief Chirpa, the leader of Bright Tree Village, where we'll be staying for the next few days." Chirpa bowed to them, then spoke a few words. The droid shuffled forward to translate. "Chief Chirpa welcomes you to Endor," he said, words coming out pinched and precise, "and requests that you make yourself at home. If there is anything he or his warriors can do while you are assisting their neighbors, please let him know."

There was a brief conversation between Threepio and the Chief. "Or tell me and I will convey it," Threepio said. "I am C-3PO, human cyborg relations, and will be serving as translator for you during your stay here. Do watch out for the bugs, and the large drops, and the variety of creatures found in the forest..."

Luke shook his head at him and Threepio stopped speaking. "He worries a little too much," he explained with an easy smile. "If you'll follow me, you can drop off your stuff in the visitors' quarters and we can get started building some huts."

"It's just a few more months," he said. "And I've got an offer to go to Valdemar after I graduate, do some diplomatic stuff between Karse and our galaxy."

"Are you going to put your hair in buns?" Luke teased. "Do I get to call you 'Your Worshipfulness'?"

"I prefer Your Grace," Gavin said haughtily. "As for the hair, nope. But, if your sister wants to give me some tips, I'll take 'em."

"On being a diplomat?" Luke beamed. "I think you'll do really well, but I can certainly ask her. I have to check in tonight anyway."

"Thankfully, these people aren't hostile at all so I shouldn't be too bad at it," Gavin said. "They're mostly interested in how we fly. They use animals. Or beasts."

"I prefer the X-Wings, yes," Luke said, grinning. "Less chance of falling off."

"They use gryphons," Gavin said, carefully pronouncing the name. "And I've seen them. They're...I can't even really compare it to anything we have here. Smooth flight though."

"I'm jealous," Luke admitted. "I've only flown mechanical things."

"Me too," Lee agreed. "Well, once I flew without the aid of mechanics. But jumping off a roof and hitting the sand doesn't really denote flying."

"No, that's generally classified as falling," Luke said, laughing. "Even falling with a purpose isn't flying."

"Does it count if I thought I could fly?" Gavin asked. "Attempted flying!"

"No, it doesn't count," Luke said, laughing harder. "I tried that argument on Aunt Beru and nothing."

"Well, it was fun if a little painful when I hit the ground," he snickered. "Maybe I'll try it again off a few of these trees."

He would not be doing that.

"Make sure to tell Artoo first," Luke said. "I want footage."

He'd missed Gavin, if that wasn't obvious.

"Oh, like I would put myself out there like that," Gavin said and took a swipe at Luke's head.

Luke ducked easily and laughed. "Is that how you treat superior officers?" he teased.

"It's how I treat people with bad hair likes yours!" Gavin said and swiped at his head again.

"I could toss you up a tree and leave you there forever," Luke said as his hair got thoroughly mussed.

Not that you could really tell.

"Oh please, you don't think I could climb down?" Gavin asked. "I'm not a wimp."

"Have you seen how tall some of these trees are?" Luke replied.

"I'd get the Ewoks to help me," Gavin decided.

"Are you part of the tribe? No, you are not," Luke said with a grin. "Am I? Well, yes, yes I am!"

"No, I'm not," Gavin said and then, raising his voice just a touch, "I know lots of embarrassing stories about you!"

"Do you?" Threepio asked, sounding interested. "Did Master Luke get into a lot of trouble?"

Luke stood there and tried not to die.

"Not trouble," Gavin said, "but he did get into a lot of...situations. He hasn't told you any of them?"
