Washington DC [Sunday Morning]

After arriving in front of the Air & Space Museum, Veronica passed out maps and told her students, "You can go anywhere and take pictures, but I recommend the places circled on these maps. You're also free to check out any of the museums on the Mall."

After a bit of a walk from the Air and Space Museum (http://community.livejournal.com/fh_trips/10529.html?thread=1156129#t1156129), Rory and Anakin stood at the foot of the steps leading up to the memorial.

"Told you it was bigger," she said.

Anakin stared. "Okay, that's bigger," he said, ignoring the stares of the fanny-pack toting tourists at what he was wearing.

Rory eyed the tourists, and with a quick look around, took his hand to start up the steps. "Little bit," she said. "Do you know anything about the presidents?"

"The basics," Anakin said. "This one was president during a major war, the current one's an idiot, and the first one looked a lot like a penis?" He gestured towards the Washington Monument. "I guess?"

Rory just about died laughing, doubling over with giggles.

"No, not exactly," she said when she was under control, wiping tears from her eyes and still giggling a little

"I guess he wasn't also 14 stories tall either, huh?" Anakin asked.

"No, no he wasn't. But he had wooden teeth," she said, still smiling.

Anakin blinked. "Of course he did," he said, looking puzzled.

"They were dentures," she laughed as they continued up the steps. "But no, Washington wasn't particularly phallic...as far as I know. No more than the average man, I guess."

"Some look more phallic than others," Anakin said. He squinted at the statue of Abraham Lincoln. "This guy...only moderately phallic, I'd say."

Behind him, a mother gave him an outraged glare and shuffled her little boy out of earshot.

Rory bit her lip, but managed a terribly attractive snort. "Well. Lincoln had a disfiguring disease. So...not a very good phallus. Possibly one with an STD," she said quietly.

"Fun," Anakin said, smiling. He glanced up at the words carved on the wall.

"With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan--to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations," he read aloud.

He swallowed against a sudden lump in his throat. "Nice thoughts," he said. "Wish our politicians were like that."

Rory nodded, her levity gone. "He was a very good man, if the history books are to be believed," she said softly. "He had a huge impact, for better or worse. He tried to bind together people in a war that was pitting brothers and friends against each other, he spoke candidly and eloquently of those who fell in battle, he freed thousands upon thousands of slaves...."

She gave his hand a squeeze, conscious of her audience. "And he was killed for his efforts, and for his vision of what this nation could be once we were united again. Kind of seems to be the case with most people with ideas that could change the world."

Anakin squeezed her hand back. "The Chancellor's trying," he said, still staring up at the words on the wall, "but it's like the entire things is slipping through our fingers. The harder we try, the worse things get."

"It'll get better," she said softly. "Something good will come out of all of it. Things always turn out that way."

"I hope you're right," he said, not looking entirely convinced.

"I am," she said with the absolute confidence that comes from years of naïveté and optimism.

Anakin smiled down at her and gave her hand another squeeze.
