Washington DC [Sunday Morning]

After arriving in front of the Air & Space Museum, Veronica passed out maps and told her students, "You can go anywhere and take pictures, but I recommend the places circled on these maps. You're also free to check out any of the museums on the Mall."

"They were dentures," she laughed as they continued up the steps. "But no, Washington wasn't particularly phallic...as far as I know. No more than the average man, I guess."

"Some look more phallic than others," Anakin said. He squinted at the statue of Abraham Lincoln. "This guy...only moderately phallic, I'd say."

Behind him, a mother gave him an outraged glare and shuffled her little boy out of earshot.

Rory bit her lip, but managed a terribly attractive snort. "Well. Lincoln had a disfiguring disease. So...not a very good phallus. Possibly one with an STD," she said quietly.

"Fun," Anakin said, smiling. He glanced up at the words carved on the wall.

"With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan--to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations," he read aloud.

He swallowed against a sudden lump in his throat. "Nice thoughts," he said. "Wish our politicians were like that."

Rory nodded, her levity gone. "He was a very good man, if the history books are to be believed," she said softly. "He had a huge impact, for better or worse. He tried to bind together people in a war that was pitting brothers and friends against each other, he spoke candidly and eloquently of those who fell in battle, he freed thousands upon thousands of slaves...."

She gave his hand a squeeze, conscious of her audience. "And he was killed for his efforts, and for his vision of what this nation could be once we were united again. Kind of seems to be the case with most people with ideas that could change the world."

Anakin squeezed her hand back. "The Chancellor's trying," he said, still staring up at the words on the wall, "but it's like the entire things is slipping through our fingers. The harder we try, the worse things get."
