MARYLAND RENAISSANCE FAIRE, SUNDAY, DAYTIME

Occasionally, the world Fandom was in departed from reality. Usually this was to do things like make jellybeans fall from the sky, but sometimes it worked out in Fandomites' favor.

And so it was that when the Fandom shuttle pulled up to the Maryland Rennaissance Faire grounds on Sunday, the day was cool but clear. The ground was decidedly not covered with freak slushy snow.

The trumpets blared, the actor posing as Lord Mayor of the village made a speech, and Revel Grove was officially opened.

"It is," he laughed softly. "I admit, I passed them by without pausing very long. It is an all too familiar sight to me, but I suppose it would not be here. You would enjoy Minas Tirith then. Especially in the lower levels there are many artisans. And even the Citadel has its own smiths."

"That would be so cool to see," Angelica said. "Do you ever get to take people back home with you to visit? Or would that get you in trouble?"

"I have not tried, though it has crossed my mind several times," he admitted. "There are many things I would wish for my friends to see, but I do not know how my father would look upon me bringing people from another world to Gondor."

There were ways to bring his friends and have his father not know at all and while Boromir would help, Faramir was not sure he wanted to go behind his father's back.

"Yeah, Ms. Frost probably wouldn't like it if I brought people back to the Academy for a visit," Angelica said. Not quite the same, but she could sympathize. "And it probably would be really easy for someone to accidentally out themselves as not being from there if they said the wrong thing at the wrong time."

"I suspect you would stand out as much as I do here," he agreed, grinning a little at the thought. "But it would not be impossible to think of an explanation for it, and my word does hold some weight at least to keep you all safe."

"I'd have to keep my mouth shut," Angelica said with a grin of her own. "And maybe buy something here what would make me fit in. So long as they didn't think this was a sign of evil or something." She flipped her hand through her red hair; she'd had her share of stupid ginger taunts at her old school before the Academy.

"It does not," Faramir assured her, looking amused. "A sign of evil would be if you could not bare the sunlight. Luckily I have been in Fandom long enough to know even that might not mean anything. It may, however, turn many heads so you may have to watch yourself either way."

"Well, I burn pretty easily but it's not like I burst into flames or anything," Angelica giggled.

"How have you been doing? I haven't talked to you in like forever. What classes are you taking?"

"I believe I have been guilty of what my brother would call having my nose glued to too many books," Faramir admitted sheepishly.

"I have been well. And I am currently following Lord Tyrion's class and Captain Shunsui and Lady Ghanima's class. Both very interesting. What of you? Have you managed to steer clear of the island's madness?"

"Not really," Angelica said, wrinkling her nose. "Ethics class is pretty interesting, but the one Professor Madrox is teaching is just weird. And I got turned into a boy last month."

The less said about the soap opera weekend, however, the better.

"It seems that changing gender might be a mandatory experience on the island," Faramir remarked, hoping that offered some comfort. "How is the class weird?"

"It doesn't make sense," Angelica complained. "We had to lick doorknobs one class, and in another we had to dress like Master Skywalker and ring bells. I'm not sure what we're supposed to be learning."

Other than that Jamie was completely insane.

"It is not meant to make you stand up and refuse to do pointless tasks?" Faramir asked, having obviously never met Jamie before.

"Oh, believe me, I have," Angelica said. "I didn't lick any doorknobs and I wasn't going to make fun of Master Skywalker, especially while I'm in his class! He always argues with us when we refuse, though."

She shrugged and shook her head. "Maybe that is the point, to make us stand up for ourselves or debate him, but it's just so strange."

"It sounds strange, but if it is his point, then it seems you are doing well," he reasoned. "I believe I will steer clear of his classes, though. I do not think licking doorknobs is meant for me."

"That's probably a good idea," Angelica said.

She leaned against the fence, watching the jousting for a moment. "I hope they're careful with the horses," she said. "It looks like they are, but I don't want to see any of them get hurt."

"The horses will be fine," Faramir assured her. "They seem well adjusted to the fighting. The riders, a little less so."

"Well, they probably only do this on weekends," Angelica said. "Not like it's a full time thing. So maybe they aren't as comfortable in the saddle."

"It is less awkward than the fighters I saw earlier," he laughed at himself as he realised what he had said. "I am sounding like my brother. It is strange, fighting is not my passion, but it still makes my fingers itch to correct them. They would not stand a chance in a real battle."

Re: ENTERTAINMENT - JOUSTING

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Did you have to do much fighting back home?" Angelica asked hesitantly. That was something she had little experience with outside Emma's danger room.

Faramir nodded, his attention on the jousters. "More than I would like. My country is at war and I fear I will see much more fighting before it shall end. Something I hope you will not need to do."

"Well, I have to deal with people who might want to hurt me because of what I am," Angelica admitted quietly. "Sometimes people talk about a war between us and normal people. But I hope that never happens."

It reminded him of some of the things Jonothon had told him and Faramir frowned. "I hope it does not either," he agreed. "It does not take much to see that you have a good heart. I hope that people in your world as not so blind."

"You're smarter than a lot of people in my world," Angelica said, managing a tiny smile. "They just hate everything they don't understand, I guess."

"I believe it is a fear every world knows," Faramir was frowning at the jousters. "Not that it is justified, but it seems Men has a tendencies to turn upon each other when there is no common cause uniting them."
