St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Tuesday Morning and Afternoon

But for anyone who actually wanted to get out of the hotel, there was plenty to do today. The morning program for Fandom was filled with an introductory look at the Habitat for Humanity housing project they'd be working on all week. It was a little out of the city center, on an abandoned plot the local chapter had found. Some of the houses were already a little further along - others weren't much more than a few stacks of wooden planks. There would be plenty to do, and the help was needed.

There was plenty to do in the afternoons too, however. Shopping trips and hiking trails were available to anyone who might be interested.

Of course, you could always just wander around town on your own... but it was still a little rainy.

Bruce had done some carpentry in the past, but he had never really helped frame a house. It was a new experience, and one that he was learning from quickly.

Given a choice, Cara preferred to have something that would tax her muscles, so hauling around timber it was.

Ben was totally not stalking Ender looking for something he wouldn't have to think too hard about doing, and lifting boards was something he could almost do in his sleep thanks to years and years (and years...) of Jedi training, which was weirdly rock-and-stick lifting intensive.

He was using his arms when people were looking, of course (he didn't spend all of the time at the gym just standing around), but he was also holding up more than most people could. Hopefully the supervisors weren't watching too carefully...

If there was anything on this project that was suited for Puck's musculature, it was this. It was easy for him to haul around large pieces of wood (insert your own joke here), and he felt fairly at home.

Which worried him, as far as his eventual job prospects went.

Tara wasn't exactly strong, but there were some parts of the framework that were more about balancing things and hammering them together than sheer brute force. She thought she could do that.

A few minutes later, she was sitting on the sidelines and sucking on her thumb. Hammering worked better when you didn't smash your fingertips.

Kate was confident she'd be good at this part. It wouldn't be the first time she'd tried to build something, and lumping wood around seemed easy enough.

Easier than trying to paint or play with drywall.

Let's face it: this was exactly the sort of thing Hercules not only liked doing, but he was well suited for. His experience with Damage Control meant he knew exactly what he was doing as he helped out.

"If I had my old strength, we'd be done by now!" he joked, laughing heartily.

Apparently asking the shift supervisor "Do I get a hat?" without turning the succubus charm up past the usual ambient level was only going to get Bo a chuckle and an offer to personally show her to a safer area.

Until she picked up a full cord of two-by-fours, rested it on one shoulder and asked if he had any suggestions as to where she should put them.

Bo got a hat.

Petra had built huts and repaired a ship with only a machete and, then, an extremely basic toolkit. Granted, not by herself, but all the basic skills were there, so she cheerfully threw herself into helping with the framing.

Sam was supposed to have a date tonight but he wasn't sure that would go off since Natalie hadn't been at her best yesterday. So, he figured he could get a little dirty beforehand and just shower afterward if the date still went off.

He'd never helped with drywall before but after getting a crash course in it, he got to work with a few other people and yes, he was definitely getting dirty.

Seifer let one of the people on the site give him a quick run down of exactly what they were doing, and then he joined right in.

They'd have this done in no time.

It seemed like there were enough people working on the painting, and hauling around lumber wasn't really Quinn's style. (Not that manual labor in general was, but there was this whole thing about setting a good example.) She put on a pair of coveralls, watched the demonstration, then started helping with the drywall.

The dust in her hair? Totally an excuse to use the airtub again before she headed out for the night.

It wasn't that Anakin didn't trust the students of Fandom, it's just that he'd been teaching them for five years...and he didn't trust some of them.

So he was putting up drywall with half of his attention, and looking out for a few students with the rest of it.

The opportunity to help out with something significant was exactly what Wesley had felt he'd needed for several months now. It was a relief to get down to the site, bypass the painting and the heavy lifting, and get to something that he could actually learn how to do. More importantly, with drywall, he could actually see it once it was finished and feel proud of himself.

So that was what he did. Sure, there were a few accidents toward the beginning, but he eventually got the hang of it.
