Everyone should feel sorry for the poor bastards left behind in Fandom where snow collected atop the ice that coated the ground overnight. But in Hawaii, everything was sunny, warm, and beautiful. It was paradise, and everyone there should take advantage!

"It seemed to be customary," Ben said with a little shrug. "There's no harm in letting beings practice their customs, provided their custom isn't to roast you over a spit and serve you as the main course."

Kriffing Ewoks.

Ender shot him a glance from the treadmill. "I wasn't aware I'd been saying anything to the contrary," he said, sounding a little amused. "I just wasn't feeling very lei-y."

"Are you ever?" Ben teased back. "I haven't noticed a lot of flower necklaces in our room until now."

"I don't usually get them thrust at me," he returned. Casual gym time banter, he could do. "Don't say things like that. You never know when Karla might overhear..."

Though ahahaha at the idea of her being up this early. Ever.

Ben snorted. "Unless Mini-Morton is in here with us right now, I think we're safe. It's early."

"And in saying that, you have just invoked Murphy's Law, if you buy into that kind of superstition." Ender's running program started to run down towards the cool-off, and he started to slow accordingly.

"I'll chance it," Ben said with a laugh. "Can you spot me on the weights when you're finished?"

"Sure," Ender said, and lapsed into silence while he finished his program.

He slung his towel over his shoulders when he was through, and made his way towards Ben. "Having fun so far?"

"Sure," Ben said. "It's nice to have a change of scenery, especially if it's this beautiful. You?"

He rather suspected otherwise, but didn't really expect Ender to admit to it in the gym.

Ender sat down near him, waiting patiently for Ben to get ready. "Nice swimming out here," he said, "So far I've even managed to avoid getting my toes cut off by wandering crabs."

Ben smiled and then slid onto the military press station after glancing at weights that had been loaded onto it.

He wasn't trying to look like one of the wrestlers on television, but definitely had more definition in his arms and shoulders than most kids his age (who weren't Ender) did.

"I'd make fun of you if you went home with only eight toes," he said, beginning to lift the weights.

And even they had the difference between them, that Ben did it for strength in actual fights, and Ender mostly worked out because it was one of the most basic patterns grafted into his routine at Battle School; it just made him feel more at ease to start his day with it, but it did make it somewhat pointless in a way.

He leaned forward, letting his hands hover idly under the bar. "And you'd have a right to, too," he said, and followed his idle thoughts about their difference in training to the conclusion that maybe he should ask Ben to freshen up his self-defense skills sometime.

It'd be nice to know how to stop someone in a fight without killing them. Which was possibly a uniquely Ender problem...

Ben completed his reps quickly, thinking he probably needed to add a bit more weight to his workout tomorrow because that had seemed a bit easy.

"Do you want a turn on this too?" he asked, standing up and reaching for his towel.

"Well, I was planning to before you got here..." Ender teased lightly, and got up to take Ben's old spot.

Ben moved into Ender's. "Sure you were," he said with a chuckle. "Need to take a few of the weights off?"

"One or two," Ender said, lightly. He wasn't exactly in competition with Ben here, and he didn't have Jedi training backing him up.

"It would really be annoying to pull a muscle on vacation," Ben said, smiling. "Especially on something avoidable."

"Don't worry," he replied, glancing at the weights and waiting on Ben to help him out on taking a few off. "I'm not particularly eager to ruin my exercise schedule measuring fitness penises with you."

Thank you for that mental image, Ender.

Ben burst out laughing. "Definitely not something you'd want to sprain," he said when he could form words again.

Ender reached for one of the weights and tugged it off. "I hear that might be painful," he agreed.

"I don't I've ever even seen weights for helping in that area."

Ben, stop.

"I think you might be taking it a little too far, now," Ender told him, unbothered.

"Probably," Ben said. "It's not like I'm suddenly inspired to create a line of machines to fix this or anything."

Beat.

"Think we should suggest that to Tony?"

"Let's not," said Ender, sagely, "He might actually do it."

Having removed enough weights, he settled back into position.

Ben moved to stand over him to spot--not that he really though Ender would need the assistance.

"And he doesn't need more money than he has already."
