As the sun gave way to the moon, the lights around the Big Island started coming on, brightening up the dark sky. Night falling just meant several new ways for the guests to enjoy themselves! A slight wind ruffled the palm trees but the temperature remained warm, making it comfortable enough to take long walks on the beach or just enjoy gazing up at the clear night sky.

There was still plenty to do, though! Nighttime activities were starting to swing into motion, music was wafting along the breeze, drawing people towards it's rhythmic sounds, and the smells of Hawaiian dishes were prevalent.

It was nighttime in Hawaii and the vacation had just begun!

Ben had decided that today it might not be the worst plan to give Ender a little bit of settling-himself space.

But the sun had gone down and so it was now tonight, which meant there was a slightly sunburned (despite his best efforts) roommate settling into a nearby seat. "Ho, kreetle."

Ender's plate was about half-full (though considering that he generally only ate about three-quarters of his portions on a good day, that wasn't that big of a thing) of appetizers. He'd been pushing them around the plate for a while now. "Ho, Ben," he said, with a quick smile. "I think we could've picked a worse place for a vacation."

"It's been hours and I haven't been chased once," Ben said with a little grin, reaching out to snag one of the snacks. "It's already better than Dathomir."

"Let's see if we can keep that record up for a few days," Ender suggested. "I don't think Hawaii is ready for rancors."

Ben bit into his appetizer and made a face. "How long have you had these?" he asked. "They've gone cold."

"Better send that back to the chef," Ender quipped. "I don't know. A while."

"Eyes bigger than your stomach tonight?" Ben replied, snagging a menu. "What was good before it went cold?"

Despite the casual tone, he was asking a rather pointed series of questions.

Yeah, like Ender didn't notice that. He shot Ben a mildly annoyed look, though he was kind enough to reach over and point something out. "I'm just not that hungry."

Ben didn't seem all that surprised to hear that. "You have a lot to digest all ready," he said, smiling a little at his terrible pun.

Ender pulled a face. It made some of the tension in his body seep away, though. "Do we need to have the punning conversation again?"

"Doesn't seem a very vacation-y conversation," Ben replied, pausing for a moment to order about half of the appetizers on the menu. And a frozen drink.

He glanced up at the sky and let out a little sigh. "Stars."

Ender made a little exasperated noise at the back of his throat during the ordering in question, and slumped back in his chair.

"Mhm," he agreed, staring upwards. "No lack of big open skies here."

"I haven't flown in too long," Ben sighed. "This is a nice break, but getting off-planet would be good too."

"Still holding out for Naboo?" Ender asked, reaching for his drink.

Of milk, yes.

Sorry, Karla, but he really was incorrigible.

"I've never been, but I've heard good things," Ben said, "but right now I just want a mental break where I don't have to shield everyone's thoughts and feelings out of my head."

"Sorry. I'm trying not to set off any Jedi empath car alarms," Ender said. Of course you were, Ender. "Maybe you should take a few days off after the trip."

"A vacation from a vacation?" Ben snorted. "I'm not that fragile."

"No one's calling you fragile, kreetle," Ender said, dryly. "You're the one who raised the idea."

Ben smiled a little wryly at him. "Guess I did," he admitted, shoving the vast array of appetizers as they arrived to the table between them. "Eat something? None of it's ice cream, even."

"One, you're not my mother," Ender said, sighing, "Two, I really am not that hungry."

Ben bit back several unflattering comments about Ender's mother and shrugged. "Your loss," he said, snagging something fried.

He would be bugging Ender about it a little later, of course.

"Want to talk about it yet?"

"Are you going to be very offended if I tell you 'not really'?"

"I won't even be a little offended," Ben said with a quick, sympathetic smile. "Just wanted you to know I'm interested."

Which, depending on what "it" they weren't talking about--and there was a pretty lengthy list--was not a fantastically intelligent thing to say.

At this point, they could probably canvas a floor with the list of stuff they weren't talking about. Even if since last week they were trying to at least cut it back to the essentials.

"I filled Karla in on the basics of what happened," he said, "That's about my speed today."

"That's fine," Ben replied. "It was a lot of stuff for a few days."
