As the sun gave way to the moon, the lights around the Big Island started coming on, brightening up the dark sky. Night falling just meant several new ways for the guests to enjoy themselves! A slight wind ruffled the palm trees but the temperature remained warm, making it comfortable enough to take long walks on the beach or just enjoy gazing up at the clear night sky.

There was still plenty to do, though! Nighttime activities were starting to swing into motion, music was wafting along the breeze, drawing people towards it's rhythmic sounds, and the smells of Hawaiian dishes were prevalent.

It was nighttime in Hawaii and the vacation had just begun!

Ender slipped his arms behind his head to function as a shield against the worst of the sand, though most of it didn't really seem to bother him. "I won't argue that," he said, taking a deep breath of air and staring up, too.

"Feeling a little better now?" Ben asked after a moment.

Because for all of his talk of space, he didn't really mean as it would apply to him.

"I've been worse," Ender answered, laconically. He felt strangely drained, most of all, but he had no idea where that fell on the better-or-worse scale.

He glanced at Ben from the corner of his eyes.

Ben gazed back, eyes steady. "That's not exactly a ringing endorsement, kreetle."

"No," Ender answered, "But it's the best I've got." He took another breath, then let it flow out steadily.

Are you proud of me?

Damn, Peter. Seventeen years, and you still can't leave me alone.

"What are you thinking about?" Ben asked quietly, staring at the stars.

Ender blinked up at them himself, wondering for a moment if he could just get lost between the stars and stop caring about any of this. Probably not.

"Peter."

Ben wasn't surprised to find out Peter was at the heart of a problem, but he was a little shocked to hear Ender admit it so readily. "Oh?"

Well, Ben could let go of that shock right around now. "Yeah," said Ender, "Peter," but failed to elaborate further.

His family was messed up enough that some things were hard enough to explain to Valentine, let alone an outsider, and he felt too drained to put in the energy to try.

Ben's lips quirked up in sympathy. He wasn't ever eager to talk about Jacen, so he understood--more than understood--Ender's reticence.

He reached over and gently tousled Ender's hair.

Ender sent him a small, slightly amused smile. "You're going to be feeling that sand in the morning."

"I'm feeling it now," he said, smiling back. "I'll get over it."
