Kellerman's Resort, Tuesday Morning and Afternoon, October 13th

The weather at Kellerman's continued to be favourable, as the autumn sun shone down on the fields and streams of the area. The staff of the resort were busy but happy to help, bustling through the corridors and courtyard.

The boards outside were advertising a white water rafting trip today, for anyone willing to go out and risk the rapids; for the less adventurous, a trip to see the Cascade Falls might just do the trick.

"I know, but I wanted to," Tara said. "And thanks. Sixteen feels like it should be a deal -- not, like, a party or anything, but just ... it's a good age."

"Sixteen has been better for me so far than fifteen was," Tahiri agreed. And that was before even bringing up fourteen. That had been awful. "I hope it'll be a good one for you too. Are you going to do anything special for it while we're here?"

"I'm not sure," Tara said thoughtfully. "The whole trip is a treat, right? Maybe I'll t-take myself to the movies or something. And cake. It's not officially a birthday without cake."

"And ice cream," Tahiri added, possibly predictably. "And who says you should go by yourself? It's not as much fun that way."

"Yeah, but if I start inviting people and try to have a party, I'll get all shy and nervous about it being a party and I won't have as much fun," Tara said. "So ... I'll kind of play it by ear. Maybe I'll ask Diana."

"Well, that's a start. And I think it depends on the kind of party. I've been to some pretty boring ones. They're never fun when they're formal," Tahiri replied. She had pretty limited experience when it came to parties. "It's different when it's friends. Maybe if you think of it as just friends hanging out, instead of a party?"

"Maybe," Tara said. "I'd like that. Maybe just k-kind of let people know I'd be in a place Friday with cake and ice cream, and see what happens?"

"That could work. Force knows, you deserve a good time, and hey," Tahiri said, in one of her astounding lacks of a segue, "I've been meaning to ask, can I ask you sometime, I mean really ask, what happened the other weekend?"

Tara, drawing a breath, gave Tahiri a sidelong look. "You could ask now."

"I could, but the thing is . . . I was wondering if Ben could be there, to hear it. If you're not okay with that, though . . ."

Tara slid her eyes over to Ben, as if measuring him. "I'm okay with it," she said. "You think he could help you if -- if he heard?"

Tahiri nodded slowly. "There's -- I should probably explain to you, too. Why that happened, I mean. He knows why I . . . get like that, sometimes. And he might figure out something we're missing."

Not to mention she'd feel safer -- for Tara's sake -- with him there in case something less benign happened.

"He ... okay. He knows," Tara said, nodding. She glanced around the waterfalls. "Not during the hike but -- soon? Tomorrow night? Or sh-should it wait until we're back at school?"

"We're on vacation. I wouldn't want to mess that up," Tahiri said, smiling crookedly.

Tara hesitated, but nodded, lightly. "Yeah," she said, thinking if Tahiri was this gun-shy it must not be easy to talk about. "Let me know when you feel ready? I don't have classes until Thursday, so ... I'm kind of always around."

"I'll talk to Ben, see what day works for him," Tahiri agreed. It wasn't her own readiness she was concerned about; her main concerns were not putting a damper on Tara's birthday or Ben's break week.
