Kellerman's Resort, Tuesday Morning and Afternoon, October 13th

The weather at Kellerman's continued to be favourable, as the autumn sun shone down on the fields and streams of the area. The staff of the resort were busy but happy to help, bustling through the corridors and courtyard.

The boards outside were advertising a white water rafting trip today, for anyone willing to go out and risk the rapids; for the less adventurous, a trip to see the Cascade Falls might just do the trick.

"What is your little friend, anyway? Besides occasionally extremely unfriendly?" she asked curiously. "It doesn't feel like anything I've come across before."

Jaime wasn't really all that comfortable talking about the Scarab, but... peace offering. He nodded.

"The Scarab is an intelligent extra-terrestrial weapon system." Jaime sighed. "It didn't used to be so bad, but... well, there was an incident. And now it's sort of crazy paranoid."

"At least it's paranoid for all the right reasons," Emma pointed out. She wasn't going to protest demurely that she wasn't a threat; even Emma wasn't that much of a liar. "Still, I know where to get my hands on some lovely painkillers if you ever need a nap from it all."

Emma had a wide assortment of pharmaceuticals stashed in her dresser, where she knew McCoy would never look. She didn't indulge often -- Emma's depressant of choice would always be alcohol -- but sometimes a girl needed a little 'help' staying asleep when the thoughts and dreams of the dorm got too loud.

"The Scarab would probably flush them. It's very protective. Hence the paranoia."

"How can anyone be paranoid with this view?" she laughed, waving the hand not currently filled with trail mix. "Even I'm not quite that jaded, and I suspect everyone of everything."

Jaime laughed in amusement. "Hey, I'm not paranoid." He inhaled deeply and looked around (and, maaaaybe, let his gaze linger on Emma for a moment or two). "But the Scarab doesn't really appreciate nice views. Alien, remember."

"There are plenty of aliens enrolled at this school, some of whom are on this trip and seem to be able to enjoy the scenery just fine," Emma replied blithely. "Perhaps the two of you ought to invest in some hobbies. Do some bonding and expand your horizons, as it were."

"The Scarab, especially since it... rebooted, isn't exactly the bonding sort. It's very... literal. Mechanical."

"I shall have to get you an Escher puzzle for Christmas then," Emma announced grandly as she stole more trail mix. "To see if I can make both your heads spin."

"You are an evil, evil person," Jaime accused her. He sounded amused.

It was the sort of thing Brenda would threaten him with.

"That's sweet, darling, but flattery will get you nowhere," Emma replied cheerfully. "I'm much more easily bribed with chocolates."

"Oh, I bet flattery is pretty effective," Jaime laughed. "And the trail mix has M&Ms... does that count?"

"M&Ms are acceptable, considering it's trail mix and we're outdoors." Which meant, of course, she had to steal more of them.

"But flattery...I 'hear' a lot of 'flattering' things, and not all of them well-mannered or actually meant in a complimentary way. It takes originality and sincerity to catch my attention."
