Kellerman's Resort, Tuesday Morning and Afternoon, October 13th

The weather at Kellerman's continued to be favourable, as the autumn sun shone down on the fields and streams of the area. The staff of the resort were busy but happy to help, bustling through the corridors and courtyard.

The boards outside were advertising a white water rafting trip today, for anyone willing to go out and risk the rapids; for the less adventurous, a trip to see the Cascade Falls might just do the trick.

"Chemical," he repeated, letting the water run over his hands again. "It's safe, though?"

It was probably too late to really think about that considering he was in the pool and all.

"It's safe," she promised reassuringly. "Just don't drink too much or you'll get sick."

"I wasn't planning on doing that," he promised, splashing some water away from her with his hands and watching it with barely controlled glee. "These sort of places are fairly common? Do a lot of people not swim in lakes and rivers?"

"People do," she said, grinning as she watched him, and skimming her feet through the water. "But see, pools like this are cleaner, so people won't have dirty water, and you can swim in them all year long if they're inside like this one. Lakes and rivers'll freeze over."

"When the seasons change," he filled in, nodding. "And if you try to swim in those, you'll get hypother--"

He stopped suddenly, overcome by a sudden rush of memories of another time he'd had that and he shook his head before ducking a little further in the water.

"I don't think I know how to swim," he shared instead. "I've been in lakes and streams before but I could always walk through them."

"I can't really, either," she offered, watching that reaction a little worriedly. It was one of those times that she seriously considered whether dipping into his mind would help or not.

She didn't, just yet. "I can dog paddle and tread water, so I won't sink, but that's all. There ain't too much water that's swimmable at home."

"Dog paddle?" he asked, catching that one first since he recognized both words but them seemingly in combination didn't seem to fit. "You...swim like a canine?"

"Ever see a dog swim?" Sookie mimed dog paddling. "It's just like that. It's pretty much the easiest way to swim."

"I--no," he said, shaking his head. "There were no recreational animals like that in the Community. No one had a...pet."

That word came unbidden from the depths of his broken memories and he was glad of that. He remembered seeing some animals in the Community but they were either stuffed or used to make food.

"Does it work?" he wondered. "It looks like it might be exhausting."

"I mean, it'll keep you from drowning, but yeah, it's pretty tiring," she agreed, more interested in that Community thing. "How come no one had pets? Allergies?"

It was a fair guess, she thought.

"They weren't allowed," he said, eyes on the water this time and trying to make tiny waves just with the motions of his hands. "We had animals like chickens for eggs but we didn't have pets like dogs or cats. The Elders didn't allow them."

She frowned lightly. "That doesn't seem very fair."

"There was no fair or unfair," he explained, slapping the water lightly with a hand just to see what it would do. "It was just the rules. They were followed or there was punishment given."

"And no one had any say in whether that was unreasonable?" she asked softly.

Re: Indoor Activities

[identity profile] see-beyond.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"No," he answered without hesitation. "No one knew it was wrong, how could they be made to question it?"

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"How did y'all not know it was wrong?" she asked curiously, her brow furrowing. "I mean, what if you'd wanted a kitty or a dog or something?"

Jonas found himself just staring at the water at that question because, really, the answer to that question was horrifying if you thought about it.

Jonas considered lying just to save himself from having to explain his unconventional home and it's shameful secrets.

"It was a different culture," he said, trying to keep his voice level and smooth. "We didn't know."

It was getting troubling how easily lying was coming lately.

She didn't have to be telepathic to know that probably wasn't the whole story there, but she wasn't going to push. "And y'all didn't have swimming pools, either?"

Re: Indoor Activities

[identity profile] see-beyond.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
He shook his head again. "It's a very flat place. If you go Elsewhere, you can find lakes and streams but no swimming pools. They weren't really important to everyday life."

"And you grew up there?" she asked softly, because she was getting depressed just hearing this.

Re: Indoor Activities

[identity profile] see-beyond.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes," he answered, unaware of how depressing he made things sound sometimes. "I was there for thirteen years of my life."

She nodded, and mildly said, "I'm glad you got to here, then."

"So am I," he said and grinned this time. "I've enjoyed myself here. It's very different."
