. . . Was it still day drinking if there was no external marker of time passing other than people and things falling through the ceiling?

"You need bowling shoes, honey," Annie informed her, wincing as she showed up right in time to catch a little Jedi-wipeout action. "Have you bowled before?"

"Absolutely not," Rey admitted. "What do the shoes matter?"

"They help you slide around with the lane," Annie told her, wandering over to hesitantly tap one of her own boots (very much not bowling appropriate, either) on the lane. "Bowling's all about, like, momentum, so you want to kinda move with the ball or you'll fall down."

Case in point.

"And the shoes are super ugly." It was kind of their charm.

"Ugly shoes are fine." Though her super cute boots were also the most comfortable ever. "So if you don't wear them you end up down the aisle?"

Lane. Whatever.

"Or at least falling down," Annie agreed, not totally sure herself (though that was a super funny image.) She wandered over to poke around in the shoes. "Do you know what size you might be? Oh, fun, there's a spray I can use on them."

Because communal shoes. Gross.

"I think a seven?" She was kind of all limbs. "You need a spray?"

"Disinfectant. Other people wore these," Annie replied, wrinkling her nose as she selected shoes for Rey and for herself and sprayed them liberally. "We don't want to have to deal with, like, athlete's foot down here."

"I don't know what that is but I don't want it, thank you," Rey told her.

"You don't want it," Annie agreed, airing the shoes out as she brought them over. "But the ugly shoes and threat of fungus are also, like, part of the fun of bowling. Do you like the ball you're using?"

"I do! It feels right," Rey said, hefting it a little. "And I can hit things with it."

"Good. The colors indicate different weights," Annie explained with an approving nod, selecting the a heavy ball from the end of the rack for herself. "This is a super popular thing to do on a date, where I'm from. Or like for someone's birthday."

So Annie had bowled a lot. And usually pretended she was bad at it. Not today!

"We did that pool thing for a date last night," Rey said. "I'm not sure John would like this."

Though if they were still here next week and still had power, maybe they could do this for Rey's birthday!

If they were still here for Rey's birthday, Annie would totally throw her a hole party. Involving slanted bowling and campfire songs, probably.

"What's not to like?" Annie asked, smiling. "It's sort of violent, there's some precision involved, you get to wear special clothes...."

Of course, she and Diego had never been bowling together, but that was because he'd probably have a really unfair advantage.

"Throwing a bowling ball down a lane is a really good way to get out aggression, sometimes," Annie admitted. "I think it's why bowling goes so well with drinking."

On that note, was there any non-skunky beer around here? Annie had started her day with mimosas and the buzz was pretty worn off. Time to fix that.

Rey had not touched that beer for reasons. Multiple.

Yeah, the beer situation was not exactly looking promising. "That and how easy it is to keep score," Annie assured her, eyeing the beer taps with critical disgust. "Like, bowling, darts and pool all kind of make up the 'I can play this while drunk' trifecta."

"Oh yeah, scoring is easy." She was not playing right. "This does seem like something that would be very bad to mess up while drunk, though."

She could say that, not knowing people did things like throw the ball into the wrong lane sober.

"I mean, I'm sure people drop balls on their feet all the time." Probably another part of the appeal of the shoes! "There's probably bumpers we can get out if you want to play on, like, super easy mode. They fill in the gutters, on the sides."

Not that Annie knew where they would be, but surely this place came with bumpers in case a child needed to bowl or something. One of Fandom's...like, half-dozen children.

"Well, no, it would be sort of artificially high because you wouldn't get any gutter balls," Annie explained. "The idea is to not go in the gutter?"

Was that...not clear?

"But then you could get all the pins down in like, two tries every time," Rey said. "I got them all down in four tries last time."

In the rules she made up.

"You're supposed to try to get them all down in just one try," Annie shared. "That's a strike. It's, like, the point of the game."

Though she liked the sound of Rey's rules. Very forgiving, that way. Honestly, probably even better for drinking.

"Well, of course. But I don't think that happens that often unless I cheat."

Note: Rey had had nothing to drink, she just liked her rules.

"If you can get them all down except one, it's called a spare, and that's worth a lot, too?" Annie told her. "But you win for doing it in the least tries. Like golf."
