fh_trips | Athens, Thursday Morning

This massive inn hosts not just a labyrinth of small rooms for visitors from across Greece, it also has stables and multiple dining rooms for everyone's perusal. Guests will probably want to make use of the long stretch of the inn - including its lovely courtyard, which hosts a beautifully detailed pond, a pretty fountain, and large flowerbeds full of colorful flowers.

...because the rooms are tiny. And your toilet is a pot in the corner.

At least everyone had a very nice bed? Two a room, even ~~or one big one for hijinx~~.

But don't expect much else from these walls, folks. At least someone will be by with wine (or a non-alcoholic beverage) and flower petals later?

... is barley bread, figs and olives, served in a large dining hall. If your bread's too dry, you can dip it in grape juice.

Fjord was actually kind of thrilled to be here, yes. So help him, everything in this place made some measure of sense. It still wasn't quite home, but it was a fair bit closer to it than Fandom was.

Wearing his human disguise yet again, he was smiling outright, giving pleasant nods to anybody else who might be in the dining hall this morning.

The barley bread was still better than hardtack, he was a fairly content half-orc this morning.

Mitsutada was quietly freaking out, at least for now.

He was just going to have to make sure everyone didn't alter history, that's all.

It is lovely. Walk around, enjoy the sight of the fountain, watch the flowers, or just partake of the copious amounts of beverages that are served here.

(Of course there's wine.)

This was not what Rosa signed up for.

So she'd spent most of the time since their arrival glaring at things and muttering "What the shit" under her breath, and then doing a little more glaring, arms folded, eyes narrowed, jaw tight.

But then she found some wine. And plenty of it. So the wine made things a little bit better.

...a little bit.

So now she was glaring, but with wine.

It sure is an ancient Greek city, full of life. Large, painted marble statues of heroes and guards line the main roads, there are as many pots as you'd like to buy, and plenty of people hoping to make a drachma by cheating you.

At least Portalocity has thoughtfully changed all your tender to drachmae.

On the large, rocky hill overlooking Athens stands the Acropolis, a district of many temples and statues and important people. Chief among its buildings is the Parthenon, a massive temple dedicated to Athena, Goddess of the Hunt. Would you like to make an offering?

There is no better place to make it than here.

Well, the aesthetics of this place were closer to Korriban than anything else Lana had seen yet on Earth. Brighter, though. Maybe closer to what the Jedi temples might be? Though for all she knew, the tombs on Korriban had once been painted like this, too. It was an intriguing thought.

Lana wasn't going to make an offering to anyone she didn't know, but she was going to wander around and nod at people as she looked at what they were doing.

Breq wandered around the city, not minding a change of millennium, and enjoying the glimpse into a part of the history of Earth. Society had clearly changed, since in this time she noticed a lot of the labour being done by slaves, which was obviously considered normal.

She made it up on to the hill and to the temple area, and approached the largest one, dedicated to the patron goddess of the city. The interior housed a colourful statue, and Breq made an offering, looking at the people around her how it was customarily done. She didn't believe in any gods, but it felt like a suitable thing to do. It amused her that had she been in the Radch, if an ancillary were to make an offering in a temple, a lot of purification rituals would have been needed to set things right.

The agora is a large stretch of public space just northwest of the Acropolis, and it is the center of the athletic, artistic, spiritual and political life of the city of Athens. Philosophers and politicians stroll around its many plazas, admiring the monuments and shrines or engaging each other in loud debate.

If you've ever wanted to be sealioned by a bunch of Greek philosophers great and small in real life, now's your chance!

The philosophers' arguments didn't mean much when you didn't understand them, although one or two of them reminded Lana of past instructors in their vehemence.

She skirted them in favor of finding a market again, and buying a long garment in violet with a yellow and red pattern. It pinned at the shoulders and pooled at her feet until the merchant showed her how to belt it.

It wasn't bad, but it could use some armor.

Of course Paris was arguing with ancient Greek politicians. Of course she was.

Okay: so it's not a modern spa. But it is a pretty bathhouse. You can enter for a small fee and make use of showers, hot and cold baths, and ludicrous amounts of oils and perfume.

Steve had wandered in here, expecting...well, he wasn't sure what he'd been expecting, but a bunch of mostly naked people wasn't it.

"Um."

"Don't worry, I'll protect your virtue," Tony promised solemnly. Because it was easier to tease Steve than be deeply concerned about the time travel.

"Thank you," Steve said. "They seem...friendly?"

"And I get to brush up on my Greek." That he could only sort of read? And not speak?

"You know Greek?" Steve asked. "Inexplicably ancient Greek?"

"I had a classical education," Tony replied, poking him in the shoulder. "My Latin is better than my Greek, though."

"Don't tell Portalocity," Steve said dryly. "We'll end up there next."
