Field trip to Normandy, All day Friday

The bus travelled quickly, maybe more quickly that anyone expected, and was soon pulling into the town of Bayeux.

"A bit," he shrugged. "I dunno. It was an important part of a big war here." If only he was capable of just sharing how it made him feel. Being mostly sadness and a hint of fear.

"I only know some of the history, but it definitely feels important," she said. And whether it was some sort of residual thing about this place, or just something she was picking up from everyone else around here, she'd dealt with it for about ten seconds.

"Yeah, it's pretty palpable even for the non-Jedi," John agreed. Memorials were just like that.

"I kind of feel like I'm intruding," she admitted.

"Why?" he wondered.

"It feels really personal. And I'm sort of detached from all of it because it's not my history," Jaina said. No, that wasn't entirely why. "I don't know if that makes sense."

"I would've thought you'd have a better understanding than most, being in a wartime situation yourself," John replied.

"No, I understand it," she said. "Maybe that's why. It's like I can explain what happened at Dubrillion and Kalarba and Sernpidal and everywhere else, but it's just words. It's not the same as actually knowing."

"Yes. But it's hard to relate that to anyone else. I'm just the anyone else here," Jaina said.

"You know, I really didn't mean to make this about me," she said, wondering how she'd managed it.

"Things are allowed to be about you," he said. So long as they were never about him, he was happy.

"Not this," she told him. And in this little detached state she was in, she wasn't interested in it being about her right now.

He nodded silently, not sure how he could change the conversation without being obvious and random.

"Definitely different from Paris," Jaina said, pretty casually. The segues came easier when you wanted to be avoidant.

"Paris was good," John said, smiling slightly and going with her segue. "Kind of like Mexico."

"Because you smiled more." Or maybe he just noticed it more.

The little smile she gave him in return was more than she'd expected from herself in this sort of setting. "Sure, if you want to go for the obvious..."
