Singita Boulders Lodge, South Africa, Monday [Morning and Early Afternoon]

The sun rose over the lodge in a stunning display of colors ~~though without the musical accompaniment~~ at way too early in the morning, but everyone was up anyway, right? It was time for the very first game drive around the park, and an early start was necessary to see the animals at the watering holes.

Fortunately in a lodge this nice, coffee was provided.

Good morning, Fandom! It's only 63 degrees (or 17, if you're a local) as you wake up, so bring a jacket along with your hat, camera, water and binoculars (and all the sunscreen--trust us) on the drive, but it'll warm up to a comfortable 79 (or26) by midafternoon. Ready to see some lions?

"Feeling kind of green," Cade admitted. "Less wine tonight. I'll stick with harder stuff."

Cade made amazing decisions.

"Is that going to help?"

Victor had been drunk one entire time in his life. Cade got to be the expert, here.

Not even a little bit.

"Don't see why it wouldn't."

Victor shrugged. He didn't think that was scientifically true, but on the other hand -- ooh, giraffes.

"Just drink a lot of water before you go to bed," he advised.

Cade quirked a tiny smile. "Expert drinker?"

"Huh?" Victor seemed surprised by the question. "No, it's just what people say. Plus, it makes sense chemically, if you think about the nausea and headache coming from dehydration."

He realized how geeky it sounded and turned to glance out the window.

"Look!" Cade said, pointing, "a...thing with horns and legs."

Cade was kind of out of his depth here.

"Antelope!" Victor exclaimed, then frowned. "Not antelope. Gazelle?"

The exact word was impala.

He sounded fascinated as he added, "Are they supposed to be charging at each other like that?"

"No idea," Cade said, leaning forward to get a better look. "Fighting over a girl, you think?"

"It's not money, so a girl's a good guess," Victor said, and winced when the larger impala got in a good hit. "Ow."

"So girl...whatever those are...don't see brain damage as a turn off," Cade decided.

"Maybe they don't have all that much brains to damage," Victor speculated. "Their heads are pretty little."

"True," Cade said. "Wonder if they're dinner tonight."

Thank you, Cade.

Victor would not have thought of that, and now Cade was getting a suspicious look.

"Maybe," he finally admitted. "Is this a hunting trip? I thought it was more like, you know. A zoo."

"Maybe it's both?" Cade suggested. "But I don't know--not my galaxy."

"What are the animals like where you're from?" Victor asked, glancing over. "Is there anything antelope-y?"

"A few," Cade said. "Some have more than four legs."

"Deer with insect numbers of legs," Victor tried. "Yeah, that would freak me out if I saw it. But I guess not if I was used to it."

"It's strange to see them with only four," Cade admitted.
