Hotel in Alexandria: New Year's Eve

The hotel was dressed up to the nines to welcome in the new year. From the ball room to the formal garden overlooking the ocean, everywhere was awash in new year's celebrations.

There was plenty of room to party, and plenty of rooms for when the partying was done. Add that to the open bar, and it might be one heck of an interesting night.

"Well, okay then," he braced himself. "I think that your reasons for leaving are valid. I think that you don't have much tying you here other than me and your friends, but I'm not sure we can compete with your beloved grandfather. And finally, I think that you want to leave, so I think that's what you should do." Rodney was breathing a little heavily by the time he finished.

"Fine!" Which sounded fair, and great, but didn't say a thing about missing her, did it? "If that's what you think, maybe I should just spend time with people who will miss me if I leave, hunh? Instead of people who have better things to do, and don't care if I'm here anyway!"

"I'll miss you! I never said I wouldn't. But I didn't get the impression that was important to you," he defended himself. "If you're waiting for me to convince you to stay, you can just keep waiting. I'm not about to be responsible for you doing something you don't want to do. This is about you, and I am not your scapegoat!"

"I'm not looking for anyone to blame! I just want to know what you think without having to pry it out of you with a crowbar!" Charlie put her hands on her hips, starting to get even more mad. "And why would I need a scapegoat when I just *told* you that the decision I'd make would be based on what *I* want? Do you listen to me at all?"

"I already told you what I think! But that certainly didn't make you happy," he scoffed. "And you may not have said that you need a scapegoat, but that seems to be what you're fishing for what with wanting everyone else's opinion before you do what you were going to do in the first place." He neglected to address the issue of his listening habits.

"I can't fish for what I want to hear when I don't know what I want to hear!" Charlie yelled. "Just like I didn't know what I was going to decide, but at least I know I can forget taking anything *you* feel into consideration on it! You don't care either way!" Totally ignoring that he'd said he'd miss her, yes.

"Well maybe you need to figure out what you do want, huh? But don't tell me I don't care! Of course I care! You're my girlfriend, for god's sake! How could I not care?" He asked sincerely. It wasn't his fault that his sincere voice wasn't all that different from his sarcastic voice.

"Fine! Be like that! I'm not going to push you into dancing with me, or talking to me, or anything!" Charlie said, alcohol impairing her balance but not her determination as she pulled away.

Rodney watched her go, not entirely sure where he'd gone wrong.
