Hotel in Alexandria: New Year's Eve

The hotel was dressed up to the nines to welcome in the new year. From the ball room to the formal garden overlooking the ocean, everywhere was awash in new year's celebrations.

There was plenty of room to party, and plenty of rooms for when the partying was done. Add that to the open bar, and it might be one heck of an interesting night.

"I'm good! Well, mostly good!" Charlie looked around for the boyfriend, gave up, and settled in next to A.J., taking a sip of champagne. "I had a great Christmas. And I passed all my classes. Are you here with anybody?"

A.J., with a light smile, shook his head. "Nope. I'm a lone wolf tonight." He took a very important sip of his soda.

"Yay?" Charlie checked, then grinned. "Rodney's around here somewhere. How was your Christmas break?"

"Really, really awesome," A.J. answered, grinning. "Went back home, saw a bunch of my old friends. What'd you do for yours?"

"Lots of Christmasy stuff, caroling with my cousins, sledding, stuff like that." Charlie tilted her head, and admitted, "Wishing I had a teleporter so I could commute from here to there every day now."

A.J. snorted a little bit. "I think a week in Jersey was enough to hold me over for a little bit. If I'd have been there any longer, this hair?" He ducked his head, fingering a dangling thread of green, "Would not be here. Deb was probably about two days away from successfully shaving it."

"No! No shaving the head!" Charlie said, patting him on the head. "The green is... um... new! I kinda like it." She grinned. "But bald is not your way, A.J. No, no way. What's Deb's thing?" She tilted her head, then poked him. "And why no date tonight, anyway?"

A.J. gave into the pats in far too much of a puppy dog fashion. "I agree with you, Charlie. I love my hair; I think she was mostly teasing, though. I hope. But that was her solution to getting rid of the green at any rate. As far as the no date thing?"

Here, A.J. let out a long, complicated sigh. "I dunno. I just...I don't know. Felt I should just do this solo today, I guess."

He tried to think if there was an easy, non-complicated way to explain why to Charlie that didn't lead to her telling him he was being stupid (only in nicer, Charlie-esque terms), but he couldn't.

"Not as complicated?" Charlie guessed, poking him with a finger. "Too many options? Or too few?"

[identity profile] by137.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Sto-op," A.J. chuckled a little, trying to squirm away from the finger, batting it away a little even as he turned a little pink. "Nothing like that. More like...um, feeling like someone else would want more options? I guess?"

"I am going to miss your soap opera life if I leave," Charlie said, taking her finger back and grinning before taking another sip of her champagne. "So, you were being a gentleman, hunh?"

"I guess?" A.J. gave Charlie a weak, embarrassed sort of smile. A blush was increasingly growing on his face. "I don't know, it's probably stupid. You can tell me if it is. I just...I don't know. You know I'd come with Beauty, but, I mean, we do everything together now, and she...I don't know, she's probably sick of me, probably has a chance to do all sorts of stuff with lots of people, but never does because I'm always there usurping all her time, you know? And she deserves to go with someone better and everything, so I just...you know...."

He shrugged. He had no idea what he was talking about.

"You goofy green-haired gremlin," Charlie said affectionately. "You didn't ask her because you *wanted* to go with her? That's so... soooo...." She didn't even have words other than 'lame' and 'sweet' for this. A.J. constantly tested the limits of her vocabulary. "Did you ever think of *asking* her if she wanted you to back off a little?"

Re: The bar and lounge

[identity profile] by137.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at least she didn't say it was stupid. A.J.'s face positively burned. "Well, no," he admitted quietly. "But, I mean, if I did, she's probably say no, even if she did want me to 'cause she wouldn't want to hurt my feelings."

"You're both too nice," Charlie said gently, bumping her shoulder into his. "But I think she likes spending time with you." She shook her head. "Anyway. Doesn't she seek you out too?"

[identity profile] by137.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Answering that question immediately had A.J. thinking about the other day when he'd gotten back. And she definitely had sought him out, and where it had lead them, and a dorky grin surfaced on his face. "Yeah," he said. "Sometimes..."

[identity profile] girlzippo.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Seeeeee?" Charlie gleed for him. "There you go. It's not all one-sided then. She's just reserved, is all. Doesn't mean she doesn't like you too." She shook her head, and said, "Okay, now I have to base the prince in her fairy tale on you. Just to see how she reacts."

Re: The bar and lounge

[identity profile] by137.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Charlie!" A.J. said with firm objection. "You can't do that! I'd be, like, the crappiest storybook prince ever. I don't even like riding horses!"

"But you're sweet and cute, and smart, and this one has a labyrinth in it. And he's trying to guard gryphons," Charlie argue, half-teasing. "Awww, c'mon. At least the hair? I can give him your hair, right?"

Re: The bar and lounge

[identity profile] by137.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
There was a pause.

"You mean the non-green hair, right?"

Re: The bar and lounge

[identity profile] girlzippo.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course!" Charlie said, completely straightfaced.

Re: The bar and lounge

[identity profile] by137.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
A.J. gave a firm nod. "The hair is acceptable, then."

There was then a pause. "Um, if you did write in something like that, and showed her, and got a reaction, would you really, um, you know, um...share that? With me?"

Re: The bar and lounge

[identity profile] girlzippo.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Charlie gave him a demure smile. "Would you want to illustrate it? Maybe? Sometime?"

"Maaaaybe," A.J. said, carefully.

"Deal," Charlie said instantly, holding out her hand to shake. "I'll talk to her as soon as I can, I promise, and show her what I've gotten finished."
