Haddyn: 200 years in the Future (Day Three)

And so our heroes have broken up into smaller groups.

One to rescue Dawn and stop Harth from whatever he had planned.

The other to protect the Watcher building and allow Willow to cast her spell.

Sam had ducked when the monkey and Harth crashed the site, protecting himself instinctively from the things getting smashed, and thankfully, from the tentacle. There was nothing but silence for a few moments after the building stopped shaking, and Sam tried to figure out what the hell had just happened, before remembering why he was really there.

"Dawn?" he said. "Still with me?"

"I'd like to be cut down now," Dawn told him, looking hopeful. The doubts and questions and issues Harth had raised were firmly in the back of her mind, to be dealt with...never. God, her head and wrist hurt now that she wasn't focused on the end of the world. "And maybe go home?"

Sam laughed softly, and pulled out his knife again. "Yeah, I think it's time we went home too." He carefully cut the ropes at her legs first, before slipping his arm around her waist as much as he could, and freeing her arms. "I've got you," he said, almost as much for his own benefit as to console Dawn.

Dawn clung to Sam like a clinging thing, keeping her swollen and bruised wrist out of the way as much as she could.

Sam was completely happy to cling back and not let go. "Are you all right? Are you hurt? Did he hurt you?"

Not quite ready to talk about it, Dawn nodded into his shoulder.

Sam felt a flare of anger at not getting the chance to go after Harth, to hurt him for whatever he'd done to Dawn, and he just hoped that wherever he'd ended up, that it would be punishment enough. "I'm sorry," he said, clinging a little tighter. "I'm so sorry."

"Why?" Sam hadn't done anything leading up to this or to her, after all. "You saved me."

"But I didn't protect you," Sam replied. "And it took so long to find you. I should have kept you safe somehow."

"You didn't know. You couldn't have known," she told him, still clinging. "This is so not your fault."

Sam sighed, but nodded. It would have been one thing if he'd been with her when she'd been taken, but he hadn't - and he wasn't going to be making that mistake again any time soon. "We should get out of here, get back to the Watcher's Headquarters and make sure everyone else is okay. Can you walk? I can carry you if that would be easier."

"I think I can walk, kinda, but I'm a little dizzy," she confided. Getting two concussions in one weekend tended to do that. "I feel like a real Watcher now."

"Okay, no walking then," Sam said, bending down just enough to scoop Dawn up into his arms. "Are head injuries part of the Watcher initiation?"

Dawn wrapped her arms around Sam's neck and clung as tightly as she could. "I don't know about initiation, but Giles gets them all the time."

"I'd tell you to tell him that you've started following in his footsteps, but that would mean explaining what happened here, and I don't think that would end well," Sam replied as he carried her out of the room. "What happened to your wrist?" he asked, trying to sound casual, and not as worried as he felt.

"Harth broke it," she told him reluctantly.

"I really, really wish I'd gotten a chance to hurt him," Sam said regretfully.

"Is he dead? Is anyone hurt?"

"I don't know if he's dead. I'd like to imagine that getting sucked into that portal was painful though. Everyone else is all right though, as far as I know."

"Sucked into a portal?" Dawn asked, glancing back at where she'd been hanging. "Sam...I don't know if I can go. If this opens, I--I have to be the one to end it. No one else can."

"No, Dawn, it's all closed," Sam said reassuringly, turning back so she could see that everything was calm again. "It closed up when Harth got sucked in. You're not ending anything."

"Did you tell me that already?" Dawn asked, his words finally registering. "I'm sorry. My head--it's a little..." She shrugged, and tried not to sniffle into his neck.

She couldn't be crying when they found everyone else. That wasn't how it worked. "What are we waiting for? I think I need to see Katara."

Sam stamped down another flare of anger towards Harth as he heard Dawn sniffle. Being angry could wait. Right now, getting Dawn to Katara was the most important thing.

"We're not waiting for anything," he said, holding her a little closer to himself. "Come on, let's see what Katara can do."

"Okay," she said agreeably, laying her head on his shoulder and trying to think light thoughts. "I dropped my stake."

"And I picked it up," Sam replied, smiling softly. "Bridge used it to figure out what happened to you."
