Haddyn: 200 years in the Future (Day Two)

By the time Mel, Zuko and Erin get back to the Watcher libary, it is in the wee hours of the morning.

Mel looked tired as all beat out but now she knew her sister was alive and if luck held out she'd be getting her brother back by the end of the day.

What she didn't realize is that her plans were about to be torn to shreds.

"Ooo. Big offer," Harth said sarcastically. "Ever wonder what would happen if that event came around again? You. Buffy. Big hole in reality that needs plugging?"

"No." Because this time, she'd shove her sister out of the way.

"Buffy did," Harth continued. "She and Mr. Tweed guy talked all about it."

"Buffy? And...and Giles?" She shut her mouth, not wanting to give him any more information.

Harth gave her a creepy grin.

"I guess the next time it comes down to you and her, we both know who the loser is," Harth said. "After all she is the slayer and you're just something she got saddled with."

"We both..." Dawn paused, and let her brain catch up. Unless Harth could read her thoughts, the only way he could know that she would die if it came down to it again was because he had Buffy's memories of talking to Giles.

And if he had drawn that conclusion, that meant that Buffy had said... "Oh."

She slumped a bit in her bindings, processing the implications of having a sister who cared more about the fate of the world than about her. Always second best, that was Dawn.

"Aw. Buck up little camper. You're not even real to begin with," Harth said looking delighted. "And by tomorrow you won't even exist."

She was real. This much pain and confusion couldn't be a monk special. Dawn decided that if she was going to die, she'd die fighting.

Dawn wouldn't let Harth end the world or kill her slayer the way Buffy had gone out. Now she just had to think.

"Sure I will. And you'll be almost incoherent from the insanity and regret."

"From what? Unleashing hell on to Earth? Because that just leaves me all warm and fuzzy."

"The name, voice, and face of every person you've killed and tortured, for starters. And you couldn't be warm and fuzzy if you covered yourself in a dead bear."

"Oh... you mean that the little gypsy curse?" Harth said with a laugh. "Oh Dawn. Now you're the one who hasn't done his homework."

"Yeah, okay," Dawn sneered. "Whatever."

"Ever hear of the Shanshu prophecy?" Harth asked Dawn. "It speaks of a souled vampire whose destiny it was to play a role in an oncoming apocalypse. How does it go?"

Harth cleared his throat as if he were reading from a text.

"He will have the weight of worlds upon him, binding his limbs, grinding his bones to meal until he saves creation... or destroys it."

He then gave Dawn a grin. "Guess which one I want to do?"

Dawn's blood ran cold. "Bigger and better vamps than you have tried it and failed." Had they failed? Were Angel and Spike still around, or had one of them become human? Had another vampire already done that? There were entirely too many variables. "And what kind of ego does it take for you to assume that it's your prophecy? Yours could totally be 'destined to die under heavy rock' and you just haven't found it yet."

"Bigger?" Harth asked with a shrug. "Probably. Not many vampires were turned at age fourteen. As for better? Well I may not have the flashy hair or leather duster but I've got the memories of thousands of dead slayers swimming in my head. I've seen the mistakes other have made and I know what can work and what won't. And you're little vampire friends are different from me in one way. They didn't choose to be this way. I did. After all... I am the one who will lead."

Several minion type lurks who have been standing around Harth and Dawn then chant together in scary unison: "The One Who Will Lead"

"You don't know anything about them," Dawn said stubbornly. She didn't even think she was lying--after all, Harth only knew what Buffy knew. He didn't know the things Spike had told Dawn while he was babysitting, or over that long summer. Oh, but wait, he'd also have gotten Kendra and Faith's memories of them. Shit.

"The One Who Will Lead?" Yeah, she heard the capitals on that, thanks. "Anyone ever tell you about the Anointed One? Things like that don't always work out the way you expect."

"Maybe not," Harth replied. "But if I'm going down? I'll make sure that everyone else Mel cares about goes down with me."

Harth turns to the a couple of lurks who are happening to be standing around.

"Gather as many as you can," he ordered. "Tomorrow, find my sister's appartment in Haddyn and burn it to the ground. There's a Tavern located in Versi not far away from where my other sister lived. Kill everyone inside and then destroy it. When the witch finishes casting her spell? Burn down that Watcher's building my sister and her friends are using as a hideout. Make sure no one lives."

Out of reflex, Dawn started struggling in her handcuffs, gritting her teeth against the pain of her broken wrist rubbing against the metal. "No!"

She really needed to talk to Professor Winchester about getting out of handcuffs when you had both wrists locked up and no access to lockpicks. Because this sucked. "I'll kill you myself."

Harth looked very amused. "Very nice. Futile but I'll give you points for passion."

"You can keep your points. I'm not into carnival prizes."

"Careful now. I can probably dig up a replica of that dress just to make it seem like old times."

"If the worst thing you've got to threaten me with is a stupid velvet dress, I'm in better shape than I thought."

"If I didn't need you alive and intact, you'd have more than a broken wrist," Harth replied with a swarmy grin. "And I would have had a lot more fun."

"Ewwwwww." She made a face. "That blood has already been spilled, thanks."

"More will come," Harth promised. "Don't you worry your little head on that."
