Scotland, June 2004

Saturday was hazy and humid and warm, but still better than Virginia.

"I am, yeah," Sam replied, hoping that he could possibly impress this Giles while he had the chance. "I can't remember the last time I saw so many texts in their original languages."

"The advantage of a millenia old organisation, even if most of it did get blown up," Giles said dryly. "You recognise the languages?"
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

"Most of them, yeah. I don't know what all of them say," he admitted. "Dawn's helping me with some of the languages I don't already know."

Giles smiled a little at that. "She's got a rare talent for picking up languages. I'm Rupert Giles by the way."

"I'm Sam Winchester," he said, bracing himself mentally, if not physically, for what kind of a reaction he might get. "It's nice to meet you."

Giles' eyebrows went up. "So you're Dawn's Sam?"
likethegun: (i'm laughing while looking down)

Sam couldn't help the way being described as "Dawn's Sam" made him smile. "Yes, sir. That's me."

That smile told Giles more about how things stood between the two young people than any verbal explanation. "Well at least you're not a vampire," he muttered to himself.

Sam smirked. "No, I'm not a vampire. Or a demon, or an incubus, or anything else non-human. I'm just a regular guy." Okay, maybe that wasn't a hundred percent true, but it was close enough.

"With a penchant for ancient mystic languages," Giles said dryly.

"I'm the geek of my family," Sam said. "I only use my researching powers for good, I swear."

He really did practically glow with earnestness, Giles thought. "Dawn says your family are hunters."
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

[personal profile] likethegun 2007-06-10 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, we hunt demons mostly, but we also go after other things that are hurting people or causing trouble." That had to sound noble and good, right?

Re: The Castle--Grounds--Library

[identity profile] exwatcher.livejournal.com 2007-06-10 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Freelancers. The Council had always frowned on those people who hunted things that the Council considered its baliwack -- partially because they couldn't control these people, Giles was sure.

But Giles' own run-ins with non-Council affiliated hunters had shown a very mixed bag of skills and morals, and far too little of it good.

"Can I ask what set your family onto that path?" Giles asked, wanting more information before forming an opinion.

As much as Sam didn't like telling this story, it was different to explain it all to someone who actually dealt with the same things his family had in the past.

"Our mom was killed by a demon when I was a baby," he explained. "Ever since then, my dad's been trying to find the thing that did it, so we can even the score. The hunting we do now...we're trying to keep other families from ending up like ours did, I guess."

"I'm sorry about your mother," Giles said quietly. And while he didn't think revenge was the most reassuring of motives, it did sound like the Winchesters had moved beyond just simple revenge into something much more complicated and realistic.
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

"Thanks," Sam replied genuinely. "It's all right. I mean, it was a while ago, what happened to my mom. Hunting is just what we do now. Which is why it's nice to have people like Dawn around," he added, smiling. "Dean and I aren't used to having friends who understand about all the scary things that are out there in the world."

Giles nodded. "There is comfort as well as strength in numbers," he observed.

"Yeah, you guys seem to really embrace that philosophy here, with all the Slayers working together," Sam remarked.

Re: The Castle--Grounds--Library

[identity profile] exwatcher.livejournal.com 2007-06-10 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's a fairly recent development," Giles said. "Although before we had quite so many Slayers to train, there was still the Council."
likethegun: (i'm looking up at you)

[personal profile] likethegun 2007-06-10 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Dawn's told me some stories about the Council," Sam said, with an appropriate amount of disdain. "If you don't mind me saying so, I think the operation you have going now sounds like it works a lot better."

Re: The Castle--Grounds--Library

[identity profile] exwatcher.livejournal.com 2007-06-10 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"There was a certain amount of not being able to see the forest through the hidebound tradtions," Giles admitted. "But there were a lot of good people doing their best to hold back the dark in spite of it. We've made what changes we could, but we started over because we had to."
likethegun: (i'm making an innocent face)

Re: The Castle--Grounds--Library

[personal profile] likethegun 2007-06-10 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do you think you could have made the changes you needed to if you didn't have to start over?" Sam asked.

Re: The Castle--Grounds--Library

[identity profile] exwatcher.livejournal.com 2007-06-10 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's a question I try not to ask myself," Giles admitted.
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

"I guess I can understand that. I don't know if it'll make you feel any better, but from my outsider perspective, I think you guys are doing really well."
