Exploring the Jedi Temple [Friday morning into Saturday afternoon]

"This is the Jedi Temple," Anakin said, gesturing. A few Jedi walking past gave him a curious look. Anakin blushed. "Um, obviously. We'll be staying here for the night. You're free to wander around and explore. Your rooms will be down this corridor," he pointed, "and mine is with Master Kenobi on the other side of the Temple with the rest of the Masters and Padawans. In your room you'll find comlinks, maps, and translated lists of pretty normal words from English to Basic, which is what all the signs are in around here. Call me if you get lost, either in the Temple or out in Coruscant. It's a big planet and getting turned around is to be expected."

The Jedi arched an eyebrow. "Here we are," she said, pressing the button to open the door to the map room.

Inside the room was dark, lit only by the hundreds of thousands of tiny pricks of light showing every star and nebula in the galaxy. She pointed to a star colored yellow located in the center. "Or, in a different sense, we're here."

Despite himself, Alec was rather impressed. He walked into the room, taking in the vista of stars and planets. "Amazing," he murmured, moving closer to the Bothan to look at the star she indicated.

The Jedi smiled, pleased. "This is Coruscant," she said, pointing. "The surrounding area is called the Core. Beyond that is the Colonies, then the Inner Rim, the Expansion Region, the Mid Rim, the Outer Rim, the Tingel Arm, the Unknown Region, and Wild Space." She pointed out the different colored stars. "Anything that's not white is where we have a Jedi out on a mission."

There were scattered pricks of color throughout the galaxy, focused mostly in the Core and the Mid Rim. She pointed. "These," she said, pointing to the Core worlds, "are mostly diplomatic missions. Those," she said, spreading her hand, "tend to be slightly more...aggressive negotiations." She shrugged. "Such is the way of things these days."

Alec shrugged slightly. "It happens. If it didn't I wouldn't be here," he said, off-handedly. "So what is it Jedi do, besides practice diplomacy?"

"We're the guardians of peace and justice in the Republic," she said proudly, clasping her paws in front of her. "We serve the good of all beings, and have been doing so for 25,000 years." She smiled. "With the help of the Force, of course."

"The Force?" Alec blinked. Maybe he should've gotten a Jedi primer from Anakin before wandering around.

"Of course," the Jedi said. "It surrounds us and penetrates us, holds the universe together." She smiled. "It's what gives a Jedi her power." She lifted an eyebrow. "Skywalker never mentioned what he can do?"

He shook his head. "Other than fly better than anyone? Not really." Alec smiled. "So what can you do, Madam Jedi?"

"I'm a philosopher, I suppose," she said, "focusing primarily on understanding prophecies and visions." She shrugged. "Some Jedi--especially powerful ones--can get glimpses of things to come. I--with the help of my colleagues of course--try to put them into perspective." She smiled. "We're not all out on the front lines like Kenobi and Skywalker, after all."

"So the Force lets you see the future?" Alec frowned slightly.

"On occasion, yes," she replied. "One of the possible futures, in any case. It's constantly in motion, after all." She frowned. "There have been cases of Jedi who made a vision come true by trying to prevent it."

Alec shook his head. "Just living life is complicated enough without trying to manipulate what might happen." He cocked an eyebrow at her, curious. "But you don't do the future-seeing thing, so does the Force do anything else?"

"The Force is in everything, so theoretically, the Force can do anything," she replied. "For Jedi, though, we mostly use it to enhance our natural senses, to heal ourselves and others, to sense other beings' emotions, and for telekinesis and occasional telepathy if you are very strong." She spread her hands. "Only for knowledge and defense, though. To use those powers for selfish gain or for aggression is forbidden."

"Sounds pretty useful," he said, though he kept his thought on using your powers "selfishly" to himself. "But how come not everyone's a Jedi?"

"The same reason not everyone has blue eyes," she replied. "There are midichlorians--microscopic organisms of massive wtfery, Lucas, omg in the blood that allow for a being to have sensitivity to the Force around her. Some beings have more than others, and Jedi have more than everyone." She shrugged. "It varies across species, too: there are a lot of Force-sensitive humans, but it is far rarer among Wookiees, for instance." She spread her hands. "It's still far from common. There are only 15,000 Jedi right now in the entire galaxy."
