Washington DC [Sunday Morning]

After arriving in front of the Air & Space Museum, Veronica passed out maps and told her students, "You can go anywhere and take pictures, but I recommend the places circled on these maps. You're also free to check out any of the museums on the Mall."

Anakin smiled. "I've always found it's more interesting not to, myself. Doing everything according to plan gets old."

"I don't mind plans," Veronica said. "But I hate being told what I can or can't do."

"That too. It's the how that bothers me. I can get it done--just don't ask exactly how."

Veronica nodded. "And don't yell at me if you don't approve of my methods. I'm not five."

"Especially if it worked," Anakin added. "But if I had a credit for every lecture I've gotten...well, I certainly be doing all that great with the 'no possessions' part of the Jedi code."

"Everyone thinks that because I'm cute and tiny and blonde, I can't take care of myself."

Never mind the fact that she's almost died four times. There were plenty of sticky situations Veronica got herself out of.

Anakin smiled. "I'd never think that. The head of our order is a three-foot tall 850-year-old alien who can kick everyone's ass. I learned a long time ago that size isn't a deciding factor."

"A three foot tall, 850 year old alien?" Veronica said. "Does he look like ET?"

Anakin had seen that movie, so he was able to answer the question. "No--those are different aliens. They serve in the Senate, though. Master Yoda is green with these big ears and giant eyes." He smiled. "He's kind of cute," he said, "and I'm far enough away to be able to say that without fear of getting whapped with his walking stick."

Veronica smiled. "He sounds like he's a much better leader than the ones we have around here."

"He's been doing it a lot longer," Anakin said diplomatically. "And both the Order and the Republic are far from being perfectly organized and run."

"I don't think any government entity anywhere in the universe is perfectly organized and run," Veronica said. "But it gives me hope to know that some people are doing it better than we are." She paused. "Are they doing better?"

Anakin's cheeks went red. "Not really," he muttered. "Kind of the reason I don't think I'd be coming back. The Jedi and the Chancellor are holding the Republic together with duct tape and hope. The government has gotten too big, too corrupt--at least according to some--and systems and trade guilds are talking of leaving." He swallowed hard. "Some already have."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Veronica said sincerely. "I guess corrupt governments are universal."

Anakin nodded. "I was hoping that wasn't true," he said. "But the Republic has been around for 25,000 years--we'll find a way to fix this."

Veronica gave him a half smile. "Well, if you haven't learned anything else here, you've likely learned what doesn't work when it comes to government."

"That's true," Anakin said. He smiled. "Sometimes you just want to chuck it all and form a dictatorship or something."

"If I ruled the world?" Veronica said. "I'd make people pass IQ tests before letting them loose to roam free. And definitely to have kids, because some people should just not procreate."

Anakin snickered. "Absolutely. The wars the Jedi have had to negotiate out of because of generational stupidity? You wouldn't believe." He grinned. "And I can guarantee that I won't be adding to the gene pool--no procreating for the Jedi."

"Now see? From what I've seen, you're actually intelligent, so we need more people like you propegating the gene pool," Veronica said. "Instead we end up with the biggest morons having the most kids."

Anakin nodded. "Fourteen or fifteen at a time, depending on species," he added helpfully. "But I'm not thinking that would really sway the Council on this matter."

Veronica blinked. "People have fourteen or fifteen kids at one time?" She unconciously crossed her legs under the table. "I don't think I could handle one."

"They lay eggs," Anakin clarified. "But that's not how Jedi are born, Barbossa's stories to the contrary. At least human Jedi."

"People lay eggs? That's... different." Veronica shrugged.

She looked down. "Wow, we managed to make a pretty good dent in all that food. I'm stuffed." ~~because she was totally eating the whole time.~~

"Well, other sentient beings," Anakin said. "They're more like birds that humans."

He stared down at the table. "Wow." He grinned. "I won't mention us being this hungry if you won't."
