Marty frowned a little at the mention of kitty's name but decided not to address it.

"No I never figured out what happened that week. I'm still having a memory issues on that."

Marty chuckled. "Yes, I remember the Gomez brothers very well and it's probably a good idea we don't revisit that week."

Marty then turned to Angela. "So how's your first trip out of the country? Are you enjoying it?"

"I'm enjoying the subject change," Angela chuckled, with a still-wary glance at Marty and Parker. "But yeah, it's a good trip. I liked the market this morning, and the Tower was fun. And this is way better than most of the Indian food in Pittsburgh."

"Why not?" Angela said with a shrug as she ate a last bite of biryani. "Let's do it."

[OOC: I'm headed home in a few and may not be back for a couple hours -- is it okay to handwave at least some of this?]

"Hi!" Rory said, bouncing up with Xander. "What are you all having? Is there curry? I like curry. Guess how many cups of coffee I've had already. Guess. Seriously."

"A hundred and twelve," Angela suggested. "Give or take a few dozen."

"Good call - except I don't think that includes the mochaccino," Xander said, setting his laptop case and a shopping bag down at an empty space near the end of the table.

"Little bit of both. I worked a little with those Greek and Latin texts this morning, and I was up at the crack of dawn which is whyfor the extra coffee, because I was up late watching the pretty men in the movie, remember?" Rory chattered. "But I didn't really get much. There are a few things that seem like they might be helpful, but not really. And we went shopping and I got stuff for people and I got Angel a present because I know when I'm sick I like when people give me pres - "

She halted suddenly, and began digging around in her pocket. "I'm vibrating!" She checked the caller ID and didn't recognize the number before answering. "Hello?"

Xander snickered. "You haven't met my friend Willow. She's like this without caffeine. If she and Rory every met for coffee? Their heads might explode before they managed to exchange names."

"Parker, what do I have to bribe you with to get you to stop saying these things out loud?" Xander's eyes widened, and he pointed vaguely upward. "They're listening!"

"No, I'm talking about vengeance demons, harpies, gods, poltergeists, tax auditors, sitcom writers, and anyrandombody else who preys on people dumb enough to say 'What could possibly go wrong' out loud." Xander shook his head and flipped his laptop open, pleased to see that this place was wireless equipped when his e-mail inbox came up instantly. "Speaking of which, I'm gonna check to see if there's anything new from the Fandom people."

There wasn't, but as he scanned down the list, between the ads for various creams he didn't need, thank you, one name jumped out. "Hey, Willow finally wrote me back!"

He clicked it open and read, then, frowning, turned the screen towards her "Hey Parker? You might wanna see this."

"Miss Gilmore? This is Mr. Giles. I have that translation you were asking for."

"Oh, hello," Rory said, automatically adjusting her posture. In spite of never meeting this man, she had the feeling she ought to be sitting up straighter. "That's wonderful. I couldn't make heads or tails of about half the stuff I looked at. What do we have?"

"It was really facinating. The problem I'm sure you were having with it was the word pādzahris. The writer took the original Persian word, pādzahr, and crammed it into the Latin third declension genitive singular. So the lapis pādzahris would, roughly tranlated, be a 'bezoar stone.'

"A bezoar is, strictly speaking, a hard nugget of undigested hair, vegetable fibers and fruit found in the stomach of an animal, usually a ruminant. Sometimes humans."

He stopped suddenly.

"I do tend to ramble. Are you following?"

"Now, it was considered a magical item with the ability to heal poisonings. Antibiotics generally replaced them, but I'm rather sure we can rule them out in this situation.

"As for the remænta unicorns, that was the age-old bane of the manuscript scholar: poor penmanship and repeated copying. I traced back the translations, and the original manuscript read ramenta unicornis. That's a 'shaving,' or a 'scraping' of a unicorn. The horn, not the actual unicorn. It makes sense, since cups made from unicorn horns were widely believed to neutralize any poison poured into them.

Rory was nodding along as she made notes, then quickly remembered that yes, this was in fact a phone call and he couldn't see her. "Okay, so we need a bezoar, and unicorn horn shavings. Shouldn't be too hard, I'd guess, given what we've already found here. Thank you so, so much for your help, sir.

"Oh, and I'll be stopping by your shop at some point when we're back in Fandom. Someone told me I ought to talk to you the other night."

"You're extremely welcome. Oh, except, what with mad cow having gone 'round so recently, it will probably be easier to find a bezoar from a goat.

And I would love to speak with you at more length. I have some manuscripts I think you'd be very interested in."

Giles paused for a moment. I just have to know...

"Has Xander spoken Latin in front of the books?"

Rory glanced over at Xander, who was talking to Parker. "Yes, sir, he did. And it caught on fire. We thwapped him for it."
