Maryland Zoo, Sunday Morning

It was a bright and beautiful morning as the school buses pulled up in front of the Maryland Zoo. The rhinos were grazing, the cheetahs were lounging in the shade, and the otters were greeting the day by making a playful romp to the water. Fandomites were handed a map of the zoo each, and were given their passes to the morning penguin-feeding program, and then they were sent along on their merry way.

Under the presumption that they understood that the animals here were for looking at, rather than for taunting or hunting, of course. You could never be too certain with the residents of Fandom Island.

It took some coaxing, but eventually Christian found himself tossing fish toward the penguins and laughing as they gobbled them down. He grinned in pleasure.

Hinata couldn't help the soft laugh she gave at the sight of the penguins.

"Look how serious they are," she said, amused.

And yet, how almost ridiculous they were. It was adorable.

"Penguins are sort of like a joke for me," Warren laughed, holding up a fish and trying not to wrinkle his nose too obviously at it. "I mean, humans aren't intended to fly, but here I am. And then there are penguins."

He tossed the fish at one such serious looking bird, who wobbled over it it and snarfed it down.

"They're birds, and they can't fly. It's like nature is laughing at the both of us."

"Does it feel good, being among your people?" Warren grinned and held out a handful of slimy, vitamin-packed fish in Bobby's direction.

Yeah, Kate would be right here, doing the feeding thing, with a grin on her face. And getting some private amusement from the way this was vaguely familiar.

Since they were out and about in the "real" world, Blind Seer had once again consented to a leash under the guise of being a guide dog.

But you weren't gonna stop either of them from getting a good gape look at the penguins, because while they'd heard of the creatures, seeing them was something else entirely. It was only after a good minute or two that they remembered there was supposed to be feeding going on.

Now, penguins were something Ariel didn't get to see often back home, and so she was absolutely loving this. And may have, on occasion, when she suspected no one was watching (not that she cared if anyone was!), she mimicked their cute waddling.

Well, watching them, anyway. She couldn't bear to bring herself to actually feed them. The fish in those buckets, dead and cold as they were, looked like too many people she knew back home.

The fish made Jason's hands smell weird, but watching the penguins fight over what he was tossing to them was kind of an entertaining start to the day.

Um, who were the cutest animals ever? Penguins. Forever. Robin would be over here, just mindlessly cooing and not even caring who saw.

See what its like to stand eye to eye with a giraffe at our new Giraffe Feeding Plaza. For $2.00 you can feed the giraffes a leafy branch of browse. The Giraffe Feeding Station is open everyday from 10:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. (weather permitting). It is a one-of-a-kind experience for all ages!

...well, there went all of Ariel's paycheck. Come later, when there was a museum shop in her presence, she'll learn a very important lesson about money management...

Yeah, Bobby totally went and got a stuffed kangaroo. And a penguin. Because he was a huge dork with a girlfriend whose birthday was coming up soon...
