Atlantis Resort - Tuesday [Nightlife]

Once the sun had gone down at Atlantis, it was time for the real fun to begin. The DJs had their music prepared, the bar was fully restocked, and the casino was more than ready to take everyone's money. Tonight would not be the night to go to bed early...unless you had someone to join you.

"Nah, it's candy-candy, but it's still excellent," she decided as she watched Elena. "And - good. Very good. Is it the sunshine or something else?"

She thought it was something yes, yeah.

"Had a long talk with Reno," she said. "There's -- I was thinking about a lot of things, after the send-off we did for Mason. The last time we lost people, there were -- parts I never told anyone. Until now."

Rose turned to Elena, focusing completely on her now. "Good to talk about it?" she asked, wondering a little vaguely why Reno hadn't already known.

"Very," she said. "I ... fucked up. Bad. So I thought it was my fault, everything that went wrong after."

The million and one 'if only' thoughts that chased you down. Seeing Rose's up close, the other night, had made hers louder.

"Was it?" Rose asked softly. Elena would understand asking straight out, and it wasn't like tact was her strong point.

Really, Elena appreciated Rose getting to the point.

"Some," Elena admitted. "I mean, none of it would have happened if I hadn't made some major fuck-ups, and I have to be okay with that. Reno pointed out that other people made some bad decisions, that day, too. It all snowballed into a huge clusterfuck, so it wasn't just -- me screwing up and people dying."

More importantly, Reno didn't blame her, or hate her. She'd been scared that she would lose her family over this.

Rose nodded, reaching over to touch Elena's shoulder. "Yeah. Yeah. It's - easy to feel differently, yeah?"

Something her mom said rang true there. That you had to do the best with the situation in front of you, not the one you wished you had.

"It is," Elena said, leaning into the touch with a smile. "I've been carrying that for so long that I didn't realize it might not be true. He didn't hate me, he didn't think I should be kicked out. Everyone fucks up. I ... feel like I can breathe."

Okay, Elena was getting a hug. "Damn straight you shouldn't be kicked out," Rose said quietly.

And Rose was getting a tight squeeze back. "Thanks," she said softly. "I ... feel weird that all this came out because horrible shit happened to you. But thank you, all the same. Better question, how are you holding up?"

"No, it's good," Rose said instantly. "I mean - that some good-ish stuff happened." She shrugged. "Weird being here? But Dimitri pretty much made me go so."

"I'm glad he did," Elena said. "If you were back in Fandom, you'd just -- sit around feeling like shit and reliving all the bad parts. Getting out into the sunshine is never the wrong answer."

"Especially - yeah. He loves the sun too," Rose admitted. "And we don't get to see it much with the job. I kinda think he wanted me to have something to remember."

Shhhh, she wasn't totally fallen for him at allll.

"Maybe he wanted to share it with you," Elena suggested, with a wry little smile. What? She could totally have meant that innocently. Friends shared things all the time. Really.

Rose gave Elena a look then snorted. "That was a terrible insinuation."

"Okay, fine," Elena laughed. "Maybe he wanted to take you out onto the beaches and have mind-numbingly good sex on the sand while the surf comes in. Better?"

"Eh, overdone," Rose laughed. Not that she'd mind, mind you. "It's like that way old movie. And anyway, he's in Fandom so no dirty vacation times."

"You're here without him?" Elena raised an eyebrow. "Okay, that sucks. In that case, sunshine was totally the wrong choice. You should be getting your sex on."

Rose shrugged, shaking her head in amusement. "That's not happening. Nice as it'd be though."

Elena frowned, and fidgeted some with her hair.

"You know?" she said. "Maybe they're not worth it. Us sitting around waiting and them just -- not even caring."

It felt like blasphemy.

"I think -" Okay, Rose didn't know where to go from there. Wow, her drink was interesting. "Or - Dimitri cares so much that he doesn't want to show it. Cause of our positions and stuff. Maybe - it's the same for Tseng?"

Elena took a few moments to consider that.

"He ..." Clearing her throat, now. "He said ... something. While we were ... on that date we were on? That made me think ..."

That it wasn't, in fact, entirely hopeless.

"I think, with Tseng, it's ... he's scared. He loses people. So he puts up walls."

Rose nodded a little. "Guess it depends - d'you want to keep trying to get through it?"

"I ... don't know," Elena said, picking her words carefully. "I do, except I ... don't want to be the only one trying. Maybe I just need to get on with my life. Maybe I need to know if there's any chance he'll come around, or if I'm just wasting my time."

He felt something for her. She had no idea how strong it was. He'd felt a great deal for the Ancient, they all had known that, and he had contented himself to stand back and watch her entire life.

"Like - you don't want to, but, yeah, you can't-" Rose looked down, trying to figure out how it worked. "You want him to be happy more than anything, but if he's -"

She didn't even know how to say this. She could only remember how she felt when she thought Dimitri wanted to be with Tasha Ozera, and how much it hurt even when all she wanted him was for him to be happy.
