Atlantis Resort - Tuesday [Nightlife]

Once the sun had gone down at Atlantis, it was time for the real fun to begin. The DJs had their music prepared, the bar was fully restocked, and the casino was more than ready to take everyone's money. Tonight would not be the night to go to bed early...unless you had someone to join you.

"Nothing as bad as what happened to you," Jack promised. He hoped he didn't look as bad as Rose, but there was no way he was saying that out loud. "Really. Just -- remember how I said Saturday wasn't my best day?"

He lowered his voice. "I'll tell you the rest of it, it's just depressing, and I'm trying to keep it quiet."

Saying that out loud would get that yummy drink splashed all over him, and that'd just be bad, right?

She looked at him worriedly, reaching out to touch his hand. "Everyone okay?"

That ... wasn't an easy question. "Everyone we know is physically fine, yes."

Which was a little snippy, and he gave her an apologetic look to make up for it.

"You don't know Professor Mitchell, do you?"

Rose frowned at him then stood up, reaching to slip her arm through him. "C'mon, let's go over there. Less people, more beach."

"Beach might help," Jack said, grabbing his drink in his free hand to carry with him.

They walked toward the waves, and, once they seemed to be out of earshot: "So to start with, he's a vampire, and please don't tell anyone that."

He was still angry at Mitchell. He'd probably stay angry at Mitchell. That didn't mean he wanted to touch off another panic.

Oh trust, Rose had her drink too. So needed it.

"Huh," she considered that. "Your kind of vampire?" She trusted Jack though, and if he didn't have a problem keeping Mitchell's secret, she didn't either.

Jack wrinkled his nose. "Closer to Tony's type, I think. Not as tame as Sebastien, but much more man than monster."

He drew a thoughtful swallow through his straw. "Not either of your kinds, definitely."

She nodded, placing him on her own list. "Right. And I'm figuring this is a key piece of information about what happened on Saturday?"

"Naturally," Jack confirmed. He wasn't spreading it around for fun, after all. "Anyhow. Someone he had turned came to Baltimore for some reason. His ward, George -- you might remember him, he was here for a while and then left -- got nervous about the whole thing and started calling people to track him down." He shrugged and looked at the sand. "Kate and I went to find him."

And there, his tone suggested, it all went to hell.

Rose squeezed his arm a little, and if she wondered why the dancer chick and Jack went by themselves without real backup, it didn't seem like it would help now to point that out.

"Did you?" she asked, frowning a little.

Backup was for suckers. (Also, Jack had halfway thought George had been overreacting, and he didn't want to round up the cavalry to find an Irishman getting wasted somewhere.)

He shook his head. "Eventually," he said. "We found another vampire first. She'd bitten someone. There was a lot of blood." His voice cracked as he added, "She died."

Rose winced, tensing at the waves of memories before looking back up at Jack. That? That was why you brought backup when dealing with vampires.

"Shit." Fucking Strigoi-like monsters. "Them are some kind of odds. Running into two close by."

Jack considered whether he should pass it off as a coincidence, or if he should try to explain the Mitchell/Lauren connection. He wasn't comfortable with it himself, and he doubted Rose would do any better, so --

"I think it was a hangout for them," he said quietly, and changed the topic. "I did something stupid, Rose. I tried to talk to the bad vampire instead of helping the girl who was dying. George helped her, but -- maybe I would have done something better."

"Cause you're a doctor?" Rose pointed out, an edge of sympathy in her voice. "Where was Kate? And what the hell were you doing talking to someone who just killed a girl?"

She took a breath, trying to channel Dimitri.

"Kate went to find Mitchell and call an ambulance," Jack explained. He felt slightly less guilty about Becka's death now that Rose and Tony had both had the same reaction, but he knew he'd never be entirely convinced there was no blood on his hands. "I'm a detective, Rose. Talking to people is part of what I do. I thought she might say something useful, or people might need her to still be there. And I was worried she'd go for Kate or George if I left her alone."

He looked bitter. "Of course she ran when the ambulance came."

The idea of talking to someone who'd just fed from a person to the point of them dying was antithetical to Rose, but she tried to hide that much at least from Jack.

"And she could've attacked you," Rose pointed out, letting her hand slide down his arm to try to find his. "Was Mitchell able to go after her?"

She didn't know how his world worked, but a vampire of the kind that fed on humans like that seemed a better bet than Jack.

And the idea of attacking somebody who could kill you with their pinkie was antithetical to Jack. Which ... might have gone back to that wacky idea of back-up, yes.

He shook his head as he took her hand. "He had other things on his mind. I hope that's what he's doing this week." Though he wouldn't have laid money down on it, if he was honest.

"Kate didn't know any of it, and I can't tell how she's doing. She won't talk to me."

Running was an idea! Getting him and Kate and George out of the line of possible solution! Even without crazy back up. But to be fair, Rose was possibly a little bit more ingrained in that 'getting people out of the way', thank you, Dimitri.

"Haven't seen the guy," she agreed. "But I can't imagine this the best place for vampires to hang out." Even if the Moroi might. "He should." Someone should, and Rose was pretty sure it wasn't going to be her this time.

"I don't know her at all. You think the whole vampire thing was a surprise?"

All right, running might have just made more sense. The narration has a point. Not that Jack would ever admit that.

"He should," came Jack's heartfelt agreement. "And I really think it was. She just -- shut down. I don't know what to say. I'm not even sure I can tell her they aren't all like that and be honest anymore."

Rose was trying not to judge by guardian standards anyway. It was - a little hard.

"They're not" was Rose's instant response. "Look at Sebastien. Look at Lissa."

"Sebastien's an odd one even for my world," Jack admitted. "Most of the blood aren't as gentle as he is. And Lissa's ... something totally different."

"She is," Rose agreed. "And - you're just going to sound like an - someone who likes them too much if you try to defend anything to her. Make sure she's okay and leave the explanations to Mitchell."

Sound like what he was, she meant, but there were reasons Jack called Sebastien his guardian most of the time -- regardless of the vampire in question, sleeping with one made people wonder about you in less than flattering ways. He made a slight noise of agreement with her point.

"Good idea," he said. "I'll buy her drinks and be there if she needs me."

Rose glanced up at him, leaning into him a little. "Anything I can do?"

"You did it," he said, leaning back. "Thank you for listening."

He'd figure out the rest of it on his own.
