When the students exited the portal, they'd find themselves on a large ledge high above the desert floor; sun blazing overhead and sand stretching out for as far as the eye can see.

"Move along," Ghanima sang as she started herding them towards what appeared to be a small cave in mountain. Once inside the entryway, the students would find themselves confronted with the giant moisture seal doors that led into the sietch. "If you didn't put on sunscreen before we left, get inside. Once you can get settled into your rooms, you can come back out or explore the sietch, but I don't want anyone getting sunburned before our ride."

"K-Mart, Tahiri, and Leto are my lieutenants for as long as we are here. If they tell you not to do something, you listen. And please do not be dismayed if the locals aren't very chatty," she said. "Fremen are notoriously wary of outsiders." Even ones brought by Ghani, daughter of Chani, daughter of Liet. "Oh, and Leto? If I catch you causing paradox, you'll get detention for the rest of your life."

"Which reminds me." Ghanima leveled a finger at her brother. "His name is 'Gavin Darklighter' for the rest of this trip, no matter what anyone asks you. I would like to keep the world from ending, thank you."

Ghanima had a rather odd sense of humor sometimes.

"Now shoo, you've got about five hours or so before we meet back here."

Triela looked around thoughtfully. "Everyone's eyes look like yours." And Ghanima's, of course.

"Spice addiction," he replied. "Melange is everywhere here, but in small amounts only. It shouldn't harm you."

Triela considered that for a moment. "Is there a way to avoid it? Or to at least reduce the amount I'm exposed to? My blood chemistry is pretty precisely balanced." There was wiggle room, of course, but it rarely hurt to be careful of things like that.

"Don't eat, don't breath." Leto frowned a little. "Does Ghanima know of this?" There was concern in his voice and he got to his feet and approached Triela.

"I'm not sure it ever came up," she admitted with a frown. Then she shook her head. "I should be okay, though."

"You should tell my sister," Leto said. "She is responsible for you here. If anything should happen to you..."

After a moment to give that point some consideration, Triela nodded. "You're right." Even if she didn't like saying that to him.

This was no time to tease Triela about something like that, though. Ghani would take it very seriously if one of her students came to harm. He nodded. "Good. Do you want me to help you find her?"

She had to think about that. On the one hand this probably wasn't urgent and being around Leto still made her edgy. On the other hand, there was a very slim possibility that it was urgent and he knew both this place and his sister better than she did.

So Triela nodded. "Thanks."

"This way." He spun around, making sure to keep the hood pulled over his head, and headed of towards one of the corridors.

With Leto to follow Triela was able to let her attention focus on their surroundings instead of the path they were on. She have spent most of her time around him tense, but she trusted him to get her where she was going.

He did know. Leto knew this place so well that the curve of every corridor was familiar. "Have you been outside the Sietch yet?" he asked.

"No," Triela shook her head absently. "Local tactical considerations come first."

"Yes, I suppose they do." Leto couldn't really object to that. "Although my sister might think you didn't trust her to look after her," he added, teasingly. He didn't expect Ghanima to take offence at all.

"I trust her as much as I trust most people," Triela pointed out. Which wasn't all that much, really, but with tactical situations Triela had a deep-seated need to handle things herself.

"There is a difference between trusting people to be loyal to you and trusting people to be loyal to their own beliefs," Leto pointed out, grinning at her.

"How so?" Triela's tone was idly curious, but it was curious.

"Knowing someone's character, you learn what to expect in them, and trust their adherence to their nature. That nature might or might not include loyalty to you, but you can place your trust in your own understanding of them."

Triela grinned in amusement. "And if you read them wrong?"

"Then clearly you need to develop that skill," Leto replied, sounding amused.

Her eyes flashed a challenge. "Then what's your understanding of me."

A part of her hoped that it would be as fragmented and confused as her understanding of him.

"It would be stupid of me to tell you," he replied with a teasing grin.

"So you don't know," she shrugged with a mocking little smirk.

It was actually kind of nice to think that she was as much a mystery to him as he was to her.

"I know a few things, but only a fool thinks he completely understand another person." He knew that it would be very stupid to pull her pigtails again, even if it was quite tempting.

Triela actually grinned at that. "A few things, huh. Guess you're not totally hopeless." And even if she was intensely curious about what those few things might have been, she wasn't about to ask.
