The Crown Princess - Tuesday [Rooms and Lido Deck]

The ship was at sea all day today, but that wasn't going to stop the fun. The sun was still shining brightly in the sky, dousing sunbathers in its heavy rays, and the water looked positively azure along the sides of the boat.

The Lido deck remained open for summer joy, with little umbrellas in every drink.

"I see you've heard of me," Arthur said, dryly. He considered the pear in his hand as if it was more important than she was. "What is it, then?"

"I brought Merlin some -- is he here? Some calamine, 'cause it looked like he was going to sunburn. And some breakfast, 'cause..." She didn't really have a 'cause for that, so she settled for, "It was there. And he wasn't."

"I'd say Merlin was perfectly capable of making his own breakfast," Arthur replied, "if I hadn't had some of his horrible cooking before." He threw a quick glance at the boy over his shoulder. Dead to the world. "He'll be no use to you right now."

Francine followed the look. "I can leave it for him, I guess." She de-shouldered the bag. "There's doughnuts and fruit and stuff, if you want some too. I grabbed enough to share."

Enough to share with an entire flock of disciples without any loaf-and-fish-related miracles, but shh. Details.

Oh, lovely. Just to make things worse, she was reminding him of Guinevere, which meant he couldn't help but feel a little guilty.

Somehow, this made him more annoyed.

"That'll do," he said. I'll make sure it gets to him, he almost added for reasons that were beyond him. He waved a dismissive hand at her.

She pulled the bottle of calamine lotion out and set it on the nearest flat surface. "That's for the sunburn." Which sort of required her to do a tiptoe thing and attempt to look over Arthur's shoulder. "Are you sure he's okay?"

The sigh that Arthur levelled in response was truly epic in its annoyance. "No," he said, "I don't think anyone's invented a cure for idiot just yet."

"He's not an idiot," Francine argued. "He's just not used to the beach." Ironically, she'd say the same thing in Arthur's defense if he'd been the one to end up sunburned.

"He's an idiot," Arthur repeated, shooting a look that clearly dared her to say otherwise again - damned twinge of guilt - "It's not like nobody warned him."

Francine pulled a concerned-but-slightly-exasperated-herself face, and didn't directly contradict him. "He was already red when I saw him. Maybe nobody got to him in time."

"Which makes him a worse idiot for failing to use his brain and ask." Arthur bit into his pear in a way that was very clearly designed to show how much he didn't care about her opinion.

She could stop sounding like Gwen any time now, so he could actually mean that.

"Besides, as pale as he is, people should've been able to spot him from miles away."

Francine couldn't completely stifle her giggle. "That's... possibly true."

You are making it very hard for me to dislike you, he wanted to say, and I really dislike you for that.

"Of course it is." Utterly, utterly blase. "Are you finished?"

Waking up was not something Merlin had been planning on doing today. Especially not to the feeling that his back may very well be on fire. "Bugger."

"Merlin, glad you could join us," Arthur said, tartly, but shot him a look that could almost be called concerned anyway. "Don't move."

"A hangover would be better than this," Merlin muttered into his pillow.

"You get to lay around your bed all day," Arthur told him, ever kindly, "Stop complaining. I did warn you." He paused. "What was it you said again? Oh, yes. 'I can't catch flame in the water, Arthur!'"

Francine winced. "You said that? I'm starting to think your boss might be right. Are you okay?"

"It had been a good idea at the time," Merlin muttered, not looking over.

Wait for it...

Waaaait for it...

"Francine!" Merlin was up and off the bed in a flash and... deeply in pain.

"What part of 'Don't move' sounded like 'Do jumping jacks,' doofus?" Francine said, marching over to... well, she wasn't sure what, since touching him would clearly just make it worse. She could stand there with her hands on her hips, though. She could stand REALLY HARD.

"I think what she's trying to say," Arthur said, with a bit of a roll of his eyes at the whole scene, "Is 'don't be an idiot'."

Taking out his annoyance on Merlin was working rather well, considering that he couldn't seem to take it out on Francine for the life of him.

"Which is sweet, but hasn't worked so far."

Merlin winced and sat back down. "I think it's safe to say I won't be doing that again."

Francine crossed her arms. "being an idiot?"

"No luck there," Arthur said. "Don't strain yourself trying, Merlin."

Cheap shots made him cheerful.

Merlin looked from one to the other. "That's not fair."
