Endor [Tuesday, December 30]

Luke, sadly for those who were not, was totally a morning person. As soon as the sun rose above the horizon, he was up, trying to get everyone ready for another day of hut building and bridge hanging.

There was breakfast and really awful strong coffee, and then the hike back to where they'd been working all of yesterday.

Luke would understand if people took breaks to explore today. Three solid days of manual labor is no vacation.

"How much longer do you have at Fandom?"

"Just a few months," he said. "Then, I come back, rejoin my squadron, and fly X-Wings again."

"What is an X-Wing?" she asked, curious.

"It's a...it's like an airplane only it's built for fighting," he explained.

"Oh," she nodded. She's seen pictures of war planes. Perhaps not at all what he is referring to.

"So you are a fighter pilot?"

"Yeah," he said and smiled. "My galaxy's been at war for a long, long time and I joined up about a year ago."

"But you are so young. Will you fight when you go back?"

"It's my duty so yeah," he said and nodded. "I voluntarily joined up. It's what I want to do."

"It's so very sad," she said quietly, "to think of something bad happening to you."

"I'll be okay," he said, trying to sound reassuring. "I will. I promise."

"Are you a good pilot, Gavin?" she asked him.

"I think so, yeah," he replied. "I mean, I'm still learning but I'm a lot better than I was when I joined."

"I will constantly wish you well," she said, determinedly. "And hope that nothing ever bad happens to you or your X-Wing."

"I can always use well wishes," he said, half smiling. "I'll be okay. I've survived worse already. I'm smarter now. I know better."

"I grew up in the desert for one," he laughed. "So boring. So so boring."

Penelope stared at him for a moment, then laughed, embarassed.

"Definitely worse," she agreed.

"Your optimism is impressive," she said, smiling. "And I am keeping from your work. It was nice meeting you and again, I'm sorry for mistaking you for someone else. I will remember your name next time I see you."

"Thank you, Gavin! I'll certainly do my best!" She skipped off then while the mun thoroughly enjoys all the lovely JM icons she's eyed today! to get back to work.
